I'm hoping the valvetrain should be ok since it's only got 980 miles on it. I checked compression the other day, 130psi.

It could be the pick up that goes into the CDI. It sounds like it is running advanced. Maybe even timing off. Realign all the timing marks to make sure they are correct.

 

Timing marks are good, but i'm not sure about the pickup.

 

I had a pick up (in a kawasaki) that went bad. It would run very good at idle. When it was sped up it would start missing pretty bad. Started firing every 2 or more turns which would make it sputter. Try swapping that out with your to see how it works.
