idle
#1
New guy here with a question on my idle. Bought this machine last year and it's worked great with the exception of my idle. I had to adjust it up a little so that it wouldn't die on me whenever I came to a quick stop. Factory specs are something like 1200 to 1400 maybe? Mines at 1600, 1700. With it at the lower specs when I'm cruising along and then stop suddenly, it likes to die. I know it's just a carbureated machine, but I've ridden plenty of other machines that didn't have this problem. What do you think? Something with the float or air/fuel mix? Thanks

Kevro7,
Both of my machines did a similar thing when they were new. I turned up the idle and it cured the problem, then the idle was too high and the tranny would clunk very bad especially when going from forward to reverse.
After about 500-100 miles on each machine I decided it was time to fix the high idle issue before it damaged something that was really expensive. I took each machine for a longer ride and made sure they were up to temp and ridden fairly hard. Then I removed the spark plug to find the plug was a little on the black and sooty side. Both machines were the same.
I cleaned the plug, lowered the idle and repeated the process. The same thing happened again. After adjusting the idle and tweaking the carb I could not get a nice tan plug color. At the time taking them to the dealer was not an option for me so I called my dealer. They suggested a jet change on the carb.
I believe they sent me a 2 smaller jets for each machine. One high speed jet and one low speed jet I do not know the sizes. Since they sold me the machine they knew the current jet size so I am not much help there. All I know know is after installing the jets myself and with a little tweaking of the carb the problem went away.
I can now go out side start the machine and it will sit there and idle for as long as there is fuel. I do have to set the idle up a bit in the winter when its cold.
You may also want to check or have the dealer check your valve clearances. If your valves are out a little bit it can cause hard starting and idle trouble.
Hope this helps.

got it back from the dealer. they said my choke was unplugged and that it must of been that way since I got it. which makes sense, it never really idled smooth, and it's done the dying thing since I got it. So they fixed the wire and replaced the spark plug which was all carboned up and now it runs great. Wish i would have known it was just a wire, I could have done that, but then what good is a warranty? hahaha Thanks all
