650 engine noise
#1
My husband has a '05 650 V-2. It has about 800 miles on it. Something in the engine started knocking last week. Took it to the dealer because its still under warranty and they have no idea where the noise is coming from. The guy said he checked the timing chain, compression, valves, etc. He said he would just have to tear into the motor some more to see what it could be.
My husband is all out of heart with it though, he is wanting to trade it in on another 650 or 700. He don't know if he can trust it after this.
Has anyone else had this problem?

DVXWOMAN, is it a definate knocking or more of a rattling?? Mine made the rattling sound before and have had the top end rebuilt twice so far, timing chains were streached out, among other things, dealer thinks they have it fixed right this time. But then again they said it was fixed the first time also, time will tell.

I am the guy with the 400 that the mechanic said was a weak valve spring.
Mine only made noise at a certain rpm, lower than that certain point it was quiet and above that point also quiet. It sounded like a loose chain and or marbles rolling around inside the engine. At first I thought it was the spring in my timing chain tensioner that was weak, I took it out and stretched it a little like you do to a ball-point pen.
What it ended up being was where part of my plastic bolts together on the pull-start side has a metal clip and that was vibrating against the heat shield of my exhaust-pipe and transmitting the noise right to the engine.
I even took a hose and used it like a steatherscope a doctor uses to try and find the noise and I could sware that it was the engine. That is where it was the loudest.
So, if you have had part of your plastic apart you may want to start checking for loose screws and such and check if anything is touching the exhaust.

I had a knock in mine too, mine was timing chains, but they didn't find out what it was until they had torn into it. I wanna say they replaced 5 chains, but that seems a bit high, so I'm not positive. There were spots in the chains that had stiffened up and weren't flexing properly.

Thanks for all the replies. It's deffinetly a knocking noise in the engine. So who knows what they will find. They said the timing chain was okay and the compression and everything was good. But, they told me it would be a while before they would be able to find the problem. It still ran like a top when I took in it so I don't know what to think.
Thanks Again

Like I said I had my engines top end done twice, that includes timing chains. But the weird thing was that the second time the chains were streached worse than the first time, but made no noise?? The first time it was like buckaroo said, marbles rolling arround. But I never had a knocking. Kep us updated on progress.
