Default mystery fuel issue?

Ok my Cat died like it ran out of gas. I took the cap off and look inside and I've got plenty.( I poked a stick in it to measure and it came out showing abot 2 to 3 inches of fuel.) I turned the reserve on and it started up and ran fine for another hour then it did the same thing again. This time I borro=wed asome gas from a buddy and I was on my way again. Has anyone ran into this?

sounds like possibly a plugged kinked vent hose in the tank or you have some gunk in the carb or fuel tank that is obstructing the fuel flow.

I would start with the vent hose and if it still does it take the carb off and clean it out.

There is also a chance it could be a little o-ring on the fuel shutoff valve that has torn and is plugging the fuel line in the shutoff. You would notice this because the valve would turn really hard as if it were jammed.

The way that you describe it sounds like you simply ran out of gas. 2 inches or so of fuel on the reserve is about normal (from the angle of the stick being inserted) and would only last an hour or so. If your keep sticking sticks in there you will need to put on a fuel filter.

Suggestion: Do as Swampy says and clean the fuel system, and keep sticks out of your tank and that should get you going again.

I think I found it. The vent hose was clogged with mud and it was a little kinked also. I'll find out for sure this weekend.
Thanks alot for the info and the patience to deal with a newbie.
