Will I ever be able to keep up
#1
Hi guys,
I have a buddy with an 01 raptor 660r it has a 11 to 1 je piston, piped,k and n, hot cam. We do alot of straight old rail bed riding and i dont do to bad now keeping up with the V2 im wondering if there is anything i can do to it to really hang with him? im thinkin the following.
HMF pipe, says it adds 7hp sounds like alot on a quad, How do they sound on a V-Twin?
K and N
Hot Cams
EPI clutch springs
Im going to stick with 26in tires probly mudlite xtrs
Would like a 765cc big bore kit but im affraid of snaping axles left and right.
Already have a dyna cdi
I realize its apples to oranges between the two quads but i really dont want to go buy a second hand sport wheeler id rather set up the V2.

You could pull the front differential and driveshaft out and get rid of the front axles. That would make you lighter and also not be turning the front shafts and stuff, freeing up usable power. Actually you only need to take your axles out and the front driveshaft out. Then get the dial-a-jet kit with the remote floatbowl and induct with alcohol or nitrus. Put on TPI 'air-jetting' kits and you are in business and you can put a scoop on the front with some rubber hoses going to your air box and 'ram-air', the water duckbill will also act a a bleedoff for too much air pressure. Put a diffferent CDI that raises your limiter, pop 25" tires back on (rev faster) - then go smoke the 660, maybe even eat him for lunch. All the above cost less than a big-bore kit and the stuff you were talking about.
Maybe the new 950 would solve your delima.
"LET'S GO RACING BOYS!!!!"
PS. Take your plow and chains off - not good for racing. But keep the thumb warmers, you'll need a good warmed up thumb...

Sounds like you already know what you are doing. The V2 is a great engine and can be modded a TON. Will you ever be able to beat him? No, but you sure can keep up and lose him in th emud, etc. A great website for V2 tips and mods is V2 tips & mods On that site is also some guys who did put in the 800 big bore kits. Good luck.

The pipe isn't going to add 7hp but itself in all likelyhood. You will add a lil chunk of snap if you do a few things along with the pipe
1. K&N
2. VDI Snorkel
3. Jets
4. HMF Pipe - It's a loud pipe, but it is a nice deep tone. Personally I love it, but it is way louder than stock.
I did EPI springs (pink/black) and I LOVE them. I did lose a few mph on the top end, but it is SO much better down low. The take off is crisp and the backshifting is excellent. Much better performance when coming out of corners. You may want to experiment with springs, or even get the performance clutch kit from EPI.
If you want to maximize the Hot Cams, you should probably get the head ported too. You should be able to add significant power with what I have listed here, and you will still have the big bore to fall back on if you really need to get nuts.
Remember though, all that extra power is not going to make you out handle that Raptor. You will still get beat, you can just narrow the gap some more with the extra zip.

Hey thanks for all the replys guys. And dont worry buckaroo i dont ride with the plow or chains on lol. And yea he still smokes me in the woods but if we get in any and i mean any mud that raptor is stuck, but we do mostly straight line dirt road racing in old potato fields.
Im Definetly going to get the HMF pipe and K and N and a clutch kit, Im not going to bother tearing my engine down for cams and head porting. And i think ill be able to stay with him good enough.
Maybe in a few years ill give the V2 to the old lady and buy something a little more poten ie Outty 800 or maybe even a 950 cat.....not that V2 isnt powerfull its a great engine and ive loved this cat the whole year ive had it.
Thanks guys!!!!

just start running the rougher terrain and the muddy trails more and he will be on the yami forum asking how can i keep up with my buddies 650 cat. that is apples and oranges both designed for specific purposes. as much as i love the v2 you will never be able to do enough mods to keep up with him on the trails just like he wont' be able to do enough mods to keep up with you in the mud and rough terrain.

True - the Cat Utes are rough ground machines, not a dirt tracker. I've built trails across my rather rough farm, and have to warn people with other machines to watch for the rocks in the middle of the trail - they were cleared only for a Cat. That's exactly why I bought a Cat over the other brands - to go where no quad has gone before.
