That seems pretty low. Almost sounds like you are in low-range instead of high-range.
Some things that you can do:
Make sure you have a very clean air filter.
Check your spark plug for air/fuel mix and if a rich condition exist then you need to check your carb choke for correct operation and you can also increase the amount of air getting to the air box (air-jetting) and/or put a smaller jet in the carb.
Some other things that you can do is to repack your wheel bearings, change the differential fluid. Adjust your toe-in (between 1/16 and 1/8 inch), check your CV boots to see if any are leaking and have gone dry. Pump up your front tires to around 8 lbs and the rear to around 5 lbs.
Get rid of extra weight - Make your girlfriend/wife walk - LOL...

Getting around 80-90 miles before going on reserve on my 02 500i manual. That's mostly slow and fast riding, dodging trees and pulling moderate hills.
Comes out to around 18mpg. Probably does a lot better on flatter trails.

I've gotten 6mpg with my V2 before, but that was a really hard day for the machine. I was either ***** deep in the carb, or white knuckles on the brake the whole time. You should definitely be getting better than 6mpg.
