Default Torn Rear Boot

After my last ride, I noticed a sort of popping noise when I turn. It sounds kinda like something is hitting the lug on one of my tires. While searching for the source, I noticed that I have torn the rear boot on my axle. It's the boot nearest to the differential. I'm assuming that this is the cause of the popping (at least I hope it is). My question is, how difficult is this to fix? Is this costly? Also, how can I tell if I've done damage to the joint inside the boot? Any help is greatly appreciated. It's a 2006 400 4x4. Thanks.

Once you get the boot off you will see if there is damage. It is not a big job to change but if you broke the axle then you will need a half shaft and that is about $150. Plus the cost of a new boot.

Do a search for a torn boot and I have posted instructions for changing the axle as well as replacing the boot. You can also down load a manual - may not be for your specific machine but will have enough instructions to be helpful.

Thanks.

The axel isn't broke. It's just a small rip in the boot. Is this the cause of the popping noise?

a tore boot wont make it POP . and if the boot is torn, cut it open and inspect the joint, and u should be able to tell if its damaged. no matter how small the hole, it needs to be re-booted. and a new complete axle is about $180 with the boots already on. and for what ite worth, if u have to replace the axle, while its apart, CHECK ur bearings !!!!!

any dirt or lack of grease in the joint will make it stiff and cause it to pop. just clean it out real good with parts cleaner and inspect for any damage. rinse the parts cleaner off with water and use compressed air to dry completely. apply some new grease and it should move freely
