04 650, good & bad

Wheelers can reach milage seen by cars now days if taken care of. I have a 1993 fourtrax with over 10,000 and runs perfect. That is a 1993! There have been alot of advancements on atvs, 3200 miles isnt **** for a modern ATV.

these things can get huge mileage. i know a guy that lives by me and he doesn't have a drivers license and he had an 03 or 04 arctic cat 400 and he had 40,000 miles on it before the motor finally went and he sold it. then he bought an 05 650 v2 and the last i heard he had 25,000 on it with no major problems. all he did was driving down roads mostly but still it was on the go every day. as for the clutch problems all you have to do is put in clutch springs and remove a shim and you are good to go. i got an epi pink primary and black secondary clutch spring and there are 2 shims on the bolt where the secondary clutch is held on the tranny by, you remove the thicker of the two shims. the primary clutch is simple to put a spring in all you have to do is take out like 8 bolts and the cover comes off and you plop in the new one. the secondary clutch is a lil more difficult you can either buy or make a clutch compressor (i made one) and it goes pretty easy. you can do a search on the internet about a compressor. all you need is a metal pipe or pvc pipe i think 2 inch???? one peace of a long threaded bolt about 12 inches. 2 nuts and a couple of washers. i have about 2300 miles on mine and i had my first major breakdown during deer season, i broke the plastic peace the choke cable hooks to lol. 3500 isn't a bad price if it is well taken care of. i am selling mine for 4500 this spring with alot of accessories but it is well used as well. oh and there was some cdi issues with them as well. the only problem is it would go into limp mode every now and then with no warning, what that basically is, is like going in reverse without holding down the override switch but in forward. i put in a dynatek cdi and i gained about 20 percent horsepower and you don't need the override switch for reverse and don't have to worry bout that limp mode anymore. they are about 200 dollars on ebay. and if you get it and tear into the clutches and put the springs in which is quite simple, i would take some really fine sandpaper and roughen up the clutches on the inside, both of them. this will take the rubber off the clutches and give the belt something to grab.

Well, I bought it for $3400. Test drove it and it seemed mechanically sound, a little rough on appearance but not too bad. It will get some tender loving care and be just fine.
Couple of questions though. It didn't come with an owners manual so I'm in the dark on some basic functions. When the key is turned on, the fan is on? He said it has always done that? Is this normal for a 650? Also, no pull cord for hand starts? It appears to have a place on the left side of the engine but has a screw inserted where I think the rope should protrude? Does a 650 have a pull cord for manual starting?
The machine runs like a scalded monkey. As far as I can tell, it runs awesome and sounds great. I'm running it in low as you guys suggested and it goes fast enough for me. And it came with a brand new set of 26" Swamp Lite tires that sure throw the mud in chunks!

the fan should only run when the coolant heats up to a certain temperature. mine runs alot cause i have a winch on it that blocks about half the radiator. yes there should be a pullstart on it. i would tear it apart and see what is going on, more then likely they broke the rope and it just needs to be replahttp://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...1QQsspagenameZWDVWced. it wouldn't be a bad idea to purchase one of these beings you don't have the owners manual. and i would say you got a pretty good deal.

What about the very first post that said "it has NO problems"? The pull start being broke is a problem. The fan being on all the time is a problem, probably something he did, like hard wire it to be on for some reason.
A+ on the Swamplites.

I think he hot wired it due to pulling the ag trailer all the time in this Texas heat?
And I'll pull the cover off tomorrow and check on the cord.
Will order the owners manual this week and I purchased the repair manual/parts catalog DVD off Ebay.
Put about 10 miles of trail riding on it today, all in low gear, and it was mostly at poking around speed. Then when I decided to head to the truck, still in low, I was cruising at 20 mph+/- when I noticed the temp flashing on the digital instrument panel. Not the red warning light.
On the way home I stopped by a friends house and picked up the manual for his '05 500. It said the flashing indicator could be due to running in low gear for higher speeds or long periods? So next time out, I'll be mindfull of this and see if running in High gear helps on the way back to the truck.

20 mph isnt even close to running high in low gear. Ive ran at 40 for LONG periods in low gear with no problems. Remember, the 500 has a completley different tranny than the v2. Its geared WAY lower than yours. Check the radiator fluid, resevoir, and it wouldnt hurt to flush it and replace the fluid. I now know why the fan was wired direct. You really need to get as much info from V2 owners as you can. Dont go from a 500 manual.

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>I talked to the owner today, he said he bought the 650 about 3 months ago from a 60 yearl old farmer/rancher. The original owner only used it to pull an ag sprayer and hauled cattle feed on the racks. He traded it in on a Kawaski Mule as he wanted the dump bed for the cattle feed, he's gettin' too old to lift the feed bags he says. The new owner loves it, but due to his pending divorce, his attourny said, "sell everything!" He builds and restores 'crotch rockets' so he knows a thing or two about motorcycles. He says everything works great, he has had no problems with it. He has only ridden it on his 34 acre place and has never gone above 30 mph with it. </end quote></div>
lol Yeah, the guy I bought it from said it had no known problems. hehe....But he didn't try to figure out the fan or the pull start issues apparently? Me, I like to know these things and correct them if possible and as soon as possible. I'm still happy with the quad, knew going into it that it was used and not like new. For the price I paid, I'm happy and don't mind getting it back in good working order.
And I sure appreciate all of the input you guys have given me, it's been a big help. Thanks!
Question on the hot wired cooling fan. Since I spend most of my driving at low speeds, in South Texas, where it's usually hot and I'm starting and stopping a lot. Is it a bad thing to have the fan going all the time? It seems like a good thing for my situation, what do you think?
