When I get to my first oil change. I am going to use Rotella T 5W40 syn. and a Wix filter. Same as I use in all my wet clutch motorcycles.

I did use synthetic but have switched over to dino, the reason being that it is cheaper and I change oil about every 300 miles. I use the cheapest that I can find with appropriate rating (it is in the manual - I think it specifies SG rating)
Clean oil is the key, whether it is expensive synthetic or cheaper dino. It is not in the engine that long - 300 miles so I feel that a clean dino is better than a dirty synthetic. If your pocket book can handle $30-$50 buck oil changes every 300 miles then hats off to you. I would rather put that same money into gas and do more riding - so I opt for the under $10 oil changes - but do them often.

Not really even if both are "newly changed" Synthetic handles a wider ranges of temperature better.

Synthetic vs conventional. Read it ,know it, become one with it.

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>There are two basic reasons. Synthetic engine oils provide improved low temperature pumping and cranking and greatly improved high temperature durability. What this means to the consumer is improved engine starting and protection at very low temperatures and improved high temperature protection against oil breakdown and sludge.</end quote></div>

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>Synthetic base oils are engineered to be purer substances with much tighter control of the actual molecules used in the oil. Conventional oils on the other hand are extracted from crude oil in a refinery where they are cleaned and processed to make an oil that is the appropriate viscosity for formulating engine oil. Conventional oils have a broad mix of hydrocarbon structures; some are small molecules, some are big. Ultimately, this broad mix of molecules can have a detrimental effect on the long-term performance of conventional oil.</end quote></div>

buck i'm with you on this issue with the oil i've used on all 3 atv's i've owned and i've never had a problem using Castrol GTX 10w40 winter and 20w50 summer , i check my oil everytime before and after every ride ; and i've never had a problem on all 3 quad's that i've owned !

I have my local O'Reillys Auto Parts store to order 3 to 4 case's of this Castrol oil , that Exceeds API SH and SG i just make sure it doesn't have the engery saving donut on the bottle ; and i change my oil every 20 hour's or more if the condition of the trail's i ride !

First quad : 1986 Honda TRX Foreman full time 4x4 , kept it for 14 yrs. without a single problem and no cluth adjustment's the whole time , and only 3 valve adjustment's ; and changed the gear lube once !

And i check to see that they are full , and stick my finger in the diff's to chrck for grit in the gear oil !

I did thid to my second atv : 1993 Suzuki LT4WD 300 KQ , with the same result's ; i sold the first 2 quads to my brother i'm on my third atv : 2006 Arctic Cat 400 Auto with the 376cc Suzuki Engine and Suzuki's Duramatic Belt driven clutch tranny so far so good !

But everybody has their own brand that they like best , it's just that i would never wait as long to change the oil like these synthetic's claim to go up to 7500 mile's in between oil chang's ; i'm not knocking what everbody prefer's but it's not for me !........

Conventional is good enough its just that synthetic is better in every way,it may be over kill but its proven to be better so why not use it is what I say.

I do not used expensive synthetic on my truck because it needs 5 bottles $$$ per change and its a low stressed engine, but on a high stressed ATV motor that only needs 2 bottles its no big expense.

We have 7500 miles on our 97 Sp500 and I hope its because it never had conventioal oil in it.

Not sure if the same motor with the same mileage but always ran on conventional oil would be as healthy in tolerances and sludge build ups and deposits.

I'm with ya on the Castrol Oil, one step lighter in winter and synthetic is definately better.. Not just the motor but rear end and front diff. also. I even run it in my mowers.
