It takes (air, fuel and spark) for an engine to run. These all have to be correct for it to run correctly.
Since it does start then you have some degree of all.
Since it stops running then the most logical is that it is not getting fuel or air - probably no fuel.
Check to make sure you have a good charge in your battery - the engine runs off the battery until it goes over 2000 rpm before the magneto takes over.
Make sure you have good fuel - not old stale fuel.
Clean your carb and air filter.
Make sure the on/off valve is on.
Make sure your air vent is not obstucted and causing a vacuum - thus stopping the fuel from flowing.
Hope this gets you headed in the right direction

Just to give update. Duh......I found out from my neighbor that was leaving the choke on all the time and after of 10 min of idle it would die. I could not get it off of choke because it seemed like it was getting little fuel. I checked the spark plug, It was all black. I changed the plug and still did not help. I did some reading on here and in the manual and decided to adjust the carb, since it was recently cleaned by a friend I thought well maybe he didnt set it correctly. sure enough I adjusted the carb a little and it purrs.. I also checked he plug after it ran for a while and it was fine. I am still having an issue though with 1st gear not lighting up. Any suggestions?
