Default Rear Brake Master Cylinder Rebuild "Foot Brake"

My rear master cylinder went out on my 05 cat 500. Has anyone ever found a rebuild kit for these? Or does anyone have a dealer that will discount parts?

Thanks

Jeez, there must be a sudden rash of this stuff going around. See my topic <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://forums.atvconnection.com/messageview.cfm/catid/5/threadid/548657">http://forums.atvconnection.co...hreadid/548657.

I checked with a hydraulic place here in town (just in case he could get those little rubber cups that went bad) and all he could do was measure the cups and write down the measurements. I found a place on the web that specialized in this stuff and I sent them the measurements, along with a picture of my master cylinder all apart, cups up front. Just go an email back from them. "Sorry, can't help you." Nice guys...

My mechanic is looking into possibly using a brake cylinder from a dirt bike if the holes line up for mounting. Otherwise it's about $200+ for a new one. I read another string where someone was on their THIRD rear master cylinder, all new, all gone bad. What kind of crap is this? And Cat doesn't offer a rebuild kit. So we're supposed to pay over $200 for what $2-3 worth of rubber would fix. Actually probably 50¢ worth!

I couldn't have said it better!

Why does this thing cost over $200.00. Just give me the parts and let me do it myself. I have looked on line and sure you can find discounts but by the time you pay the inflated shipping fees I will do business with my local dealer.

Just cant understand why they wont let you buy the parts.

So anyone else got some ideas????

Talked to my mechanic today. He's gonna use the master cylinder from a street bike that has a remote reservoir which he can easily mount. Cost is minimal. So I told him to do it to both our bikes (since they were in for re-jetting). I'll post pictures when I get them back the end of this week or early next week.

Think I'll send pictures to Arctic Cat too - ha.

The master cylinder went on my 01 500 cat. My dealer oredered me in a rebuild kit, around $40. Still leaked so had to buy new one anyway. They rip you off one the price of bike brakes.

Ok, got one of the bikes back today with the 'new' master cylinder. Here's a couple pictures of the modification.

The part is from a 1987 Honda VFR 700 street bike. My mechanic had to slightly lengthen the linkage but this is a sweet fit. No more rear master cylinder problems and I will most likely never have to even rebuild this unit. The pictures are from my wife's bike, and I liked it so much I'm having him do the modification to my bike before I have to have it done.

I think I'll send the pictures to Arctic Cat to show them how they might actually FIX this problem on their newer bikes...

Oh, and here's the bike this master cylinder came off of (or actually, one just like it)

Actually, the master cylinder was what my mechanic called "house parts", meaning they were just stuff he had laying around the shop. I can ask him approximately what it would cost to buy this stuff.

Our total bill was for $430 to re-jet both quads for high altitude, replace both rear master cylinders with these Honda parts, and fix two tires that had spikes in them (but were so far, holding air). He has also ordered the parts to replace my carb floats, one of which had a hole in it causing it to, uh, not float, and caused the engine to want to die sometimes. It was always somewhat problematic when I started it - especially in the winter.

I've got 3500 miles on my quad (wife only has 2300) so I told him to take a look at the drive belt too.

Here's a link to a Honda page with the breakdown of part numbers for the master cylinder, but I don't know if this helps, seeing as it's not the 'whole' part. I just did a quick Google but I'm sure you can find it without too much ado...

Good luck. I'm (and most importantly, my wife is) totally satisfied with the outcome of this 'adventure'.

I think my mechanic salvaged the part from a busted up bike he'd taken in. I know it wasn't knew, cuz I didn't pay that much for the while job...

And, it work fine - still!
