04 A?C 400 manual questions
#1
Hey Everyone.
A friend of mine bought an A/C400 4x4 manual for a great price but he has some questions. I told him I came on here quite a bit and told him I would ask what you fellas have to say.
1. Shifter keeps coming loose. Takes about 1/4 to 1/2 turn to tighten. Doesn;t seem to be stripped. Other then loc-tite has anyone seen this or done anything to the shifter?
2. How difficult would it be to change transmissions from manual to auto?? (my question not his )
3.) Recommended aftermarket oil filter (NAPA, FRAM, K&N, basically anything from an autoparts store) I use 0w-40 synthetic in my PoPo, should he use the same?? Pretty good drive for him to an A/C dealer.
Thanks all for any help/advice!!!

The machine screw that runs through a little groove in the splined shaft should have a lock washer on it. If it does not then you can use lock-tite if needed. If it still keeps coming loose then either the bolt or the nut (which is welded to the shift lever) is stripped. You can try rethreading it or replacing the shift lever if the problem continues. I personally use blue lock-tite on any screw that keeps workingits way loose on my ATV and I have not had any issues.
As far as changing the transmission goes...The engine and tranny share the same case so there is no way that I know of to convert a manual tranny to an auto other than changing out the entire engine (which is about $5000 new). I amnot aware of any add-on electronic shift for these machines either.
Type of oil has been discussed a bunch on here. YOu can use what you want as long as it is "wet-clutch safe". Most motorcycle oils meet this standard. So you can use the synthetic or dino-oil just not automobile engine oil. I believe a Fram filter # is 1357. They are about $5 at the auto parts store. Oil is about $4-$5 per quart and it takes about 3.5qts with a filter change. I have recently began using CarQuest filters for my AC400. They are already painted black I just do not recall the number. Cross reference it off the Fram 1357 to what ever make you want.
On a side note I get a bulk discount from my AC dealer on their 5w-40 dino oil when I buy 2-cases or more (I pay about $3 per qt) and then I buy 4-5 filters at a time so I always have them handy. I hate swamping my machine and having to drive to a parts store to get the oil and filter. I just reach onto the shelf. So check on the bulk oil may save some $ and time in the long run.

Auto Zone can crossmatch the oilfilter for you , and most of their stores carry a Valvoline Synthic wet clutch compatible oil for your freinds AC 400 Manual , if they don't have it in stock they will order it for him ; they may be able to order Maxima , Amsoil and other brand's that are designed for wet clutch motorcycle/atv oils !
Just call or drop in and ask them to look it up on their computer to see what is available , as for me i live close to my AC Dealer and she sells an aftermarket oil filter that is superior to the O.E.M. AC Brand and costs less than the O.E.M. Brand ; i also use Castrol GTX 10w40 Summer 20w50 Winter Conventional motor oil in every vechicle i've owned since 1989 with out any issues with the wet clutch tranny's on my old 86' Honda TRX350FM 4x4 , 1993 Suzuki LT4WD 300 KQ and my 2006 Arctic Cat 400 FIS Auto 4x4 with the same result's !
However i don't race my Quads or any of my Vehicles and i change the oil and filters when the oil looks dirty , and i do a complete servicing on everything i own like clockwork ; if did race my Quads i would use oils that were made for racing conditions !........

Thanks Guys. He is stopping by today to pick some stuff up. He took the lever off lastnight and the grooves on the lever are wore (rounded) and the lever was not a perfect circle for the shaft. He's trying to find a shop that has them locally.
Thanks for the help guys!
