I have been having a similar problem with my '04 500 TRV. Since I bought it new, I know it inside/out. For about the last 1.5 years it has been starting and running great during the day. But for some unknow reason, it I leave it out in the yard in the later hours of the day, it will start fine but after a few minutes, IT WILL STALL AND NOT START AGAIN FOR HOURS..... I just replaced the regulator/rectifier and initially thought that did the trick only to be disappointed when it stalled just as I was about to park it in the shop for the night.
I agree, it is upsetting to say the least.
So today I took it to a dealer/service facility to have them figure it out. I should know something in a day or two.
I'll let you know the outcome.

I had a the same problem with an 2004 AC 400 4x4. It would shut off as soon as it warmed up. If you have an electronic choke, which I don't think you do, check that first. The problem with the one I had was the five wires that run past the starter and into the engine case to the magneto. One wire had worn the insulation off where it made the 90 degree turn into the engine case and was fine until the case expanded from heating up and shorted against the wire. You can unplug the wire harness and run a continuity test with a volt meter on several of the wires to make sure they are not against the case or each other.

Thanks for all the input folks. I got ol' Big Red (that's what I lettered it) back a week ago today in a blowing snow. The service shop described it as a FLUKE..
First of all, the shop had it for almost 2 weeks and put over 5 miles on it. They tried everything to repeat the stalling problem I had. I told them to drive it around during the day and park it outside and try to run it again later in the day. Then it will start but then stall for hours. Well, they finally did it just like that and sure enough, it stalled and would not restart.
The service tech ran all kinds of tests on it and by a fluke, found that the Gas Tank Vent Hose had a kink in it up in under the handlebar housing that couldn't be seen. He said there was almost a knot in the hose. He installed a new vent hose and ran it again for a full day. It would not stall again as before. I have no idea as to what could have caused it.
Since I brought it home, I have put it through the paces in sub-zero weather and dangerous chill factors and even in the nice warm weather we've had in the last week. I have been unable to get it to stall anymore and it runs like a dream.
I DON'T KNOW IF I WOULD EVER HAVE FOUND IT...! Lord only knows, I tried everything I could think of and failed to locate the problem. I am now one very happy camper....
Thanks again for all the input. And as usual, this forum ROCKS....!
