4 wheel drive problem
#1
I have a 2005 4x4 fis auto le 400 with 111 miles. All I do is plow snow with it. When I'm in 4 wheel drive and plow into a snow bank only the back wheels spin. Shouldn't the back wheels spin as well? Any ideas on my problem?

If you are stuck in a snow bank and only the back wheels are spinning then you are not in 4wd. The mechanical linkage to engauge 4wd can get out of adjustment - most likely that's what is keeping it from going into 4wd.

my neighbor had the same problem on his 2005 400 while he was plowing the ground. There is a spring in the accuator( i think thats what its called) for the 4 wheel drive in front that broke. He bought a whole new piece and if i remeber correctly its built a little better. I cant remember how much it was.

ok. i just asked him what exactly it was. He said it was called an accuator and it wasnt a spring. Its a piece thats the size of a pencil that is shaped like a cork screw. Its plastic and stripped out. So when you hit the 4x4 button it turns the piece and locks it in four wheel drive. He could hear it working but it wasnt locking it in. To have the dealer do it,it was $400.00. he wasnt sure how much the whole new piece was. He also said it was just the same thing as far as he new. He was going to have a new piece machined so it didnt do it again. I thought he said it was a metal piece already. sorry misunderstood him.

The actuator for switching from 2x to 4x has a selenoid on it as well. I have read where either the senenoid goes out and it just clicks and make a few other noises but does not engage. The plastic gear can also break. I am not sure what the indicator light would be doing in either case though.
I am pretty sure they do not sell parts for the actuator but you have to replace the actuator itself.
I think there is a way to remove the actuator and manually put it into 4x4 but I am not sure it will stay.
There is a way to check if it is in 4x4 though. Jack the machine up so all 4 tires are off the ground, put it in 4x4 and turn one of the tires. All 4 tires should spin. You can't just look at the front drive shaft because it always spins.
The actuator may be spendy but there are just a couple of bolts and a wire to unplug to change it out.

It looks like my actuator is working fine. I took it apart and the plastic gears look good. I discovered my selector shaft that is hooked to the selector fork gets stuck in the in position which is two wheel. Behind that is a shuttle shaft that is attached to a return spring. I'm wondering now if the spring is bad. Has anybody out there heard of any recalls or mfg. bulletins on that selector shaft assembly?
