Default Front differential question

Hi, New to this sight and love going through the old post and have learned a bunch! I've owned a 98 454 4x4 for 7 years and love it. Recently right front arm bushings went out. While tearing apart I found inner joint on axle is out and they don't sell joint, just whole axle assembly.I've always wanted to be able to disengage this full-time 4x4 for easier steering. At this point of my operation is it possible (can it be done easily) to put in a newer differential(one that disengages) in my older machine. I noticed the bearings in the diffential are loose and thought it would be worth a try at this point to possibly try . Has anyone tried it ? Would luv your input!
Thanks

I am pretty sure you cannot unless you replaced the entire differential and axles included. It has something to do with the spline count being different on the axles for the newer models with the axle that engages in/out.

If you need axle parts/components for your AC check out the site called "thecvman.com" he has half axles, full axles and CV joints. I have ordered from him previously and shipping/customer service was very good.

Thanks for the response. I guess I'm wondering if another differential (one that disengages) would bolt right in? All my front end parts pretty much need repairing and I thought it a good time to maybe do this. I'd appreciate any help.

Thanks

swampy is right. Ive looked into doing the same thing except i wanted the diff lock. Mine was an 02 500 which was already selectable 4 wheel drive but i wanted the locker and cost was about $1,400 new for all this. Maybe more if other parts didn't work together. As stated before the splines are different now on the new models for the locker. Im thinking you just want the regular 2wd/4wd like the 1998s and above had. (not sure about the other models before them). Maybe try and search for a wrecked or non-working atv with this 4wd system and see if you can get a used one cheap. Are you sure you can not buy the lever to unlock the 454 4wd. I know the 1999-2000 250s were full time 4wd,but you could buy the lever to make it either 4wd or 2wd for $80.00.
