After letting the TRV sit for a couple of months, I pulled it out today and the battery was too low to crank it over. I put a trickle charger on it, and after it started I noticed the LCD dashboard was unlit and blank, and it never came back on.

I didn't jumpstart it off of a car battery or anything like that.

Anyone had a similar problem?

 

IT's a VERY COMMON ISSUE with the digital dash when the battery runs low.

And a very simple fix:

- PULL THE BATTERY CABLES COMPLETELY OFF FOR 5 MIN.
- PULL THE BIG GREEN 30amp ACCESSORY FUSE TOO.
- RE-INSTALL & RE-ATTACH CABLES

FIXED.

The gauge basically "loses it's mind" w/low voltage and needs to be re-set.

FYI: if your going to let the TRV sit for months on end, invest in a $20 1.5amp battery maintainer. It will plug into the accessory plug under the rear seat on the right side along the frame rail.

I have a similar problem. Screen blanked out, but back lighting stayed on. After an hour or 2, the IGN 15 amp fuse blew and it wouldn't run. Just to get it back to the barn took a 30 amp fuse than that eventually blew. Has been kept on a trickle charger when its not used for a couple of days. Disconnected the LCD gauge and now it runs fine w/ the 15 amp fuse but it'd be nice to know how much gas is left, etc. Do I need a new gauge?

 

Pull your front plastic(s) around the handlebars. I'd bet that you have a chaffed wire in among the wire cluster that runs down your handlebar shaft (behind the metal tabs)

If that's not it and it keep blowing fuses, then I recommend you start back tracking your wires. Another "hot" spot for wire chaffing is along the rear right frame as the main harness comes out of the fuse block. There is a sharp turn in the wires that follow the frame bend. This area is prone to causing wire short issues.

You didn't mention the yr or model of machine. Some of the older 400's 02-06' had bad stators that tended to self destruct causing electrical issues. You may also want to check your coil and if it's an EFI your TBI harness.

It can be a pain, but hopefully this helps.

Thanks Cup. I have a 2007 650H1 TRV w about 100/ hrs on it. Wiring looked OK and once the LCD gauge was disconnected there were no more problems. I'm wondering now if the low voltage problem w/ the LCD turned into an internal short in it. I'm thinking if reconnecting it and see what happens before I buy a new one. Let me know if you have any more ideas.
