What kind of mileage have you been getting out of your 400/500 AC's. I know mileage will very with riding style, what your going through etc... I'm just trying to get some kind of overall numbers. Also, will replacing the air filter with a K&N filter increase mileage? Thanks.

Our 400 and 500 get about the same mileage. They have actually gotten better as we've broken them in. I can go about 60-65 miles on a tank. if we use low range a lot and rev them up to climb and play in the mud or tow it drops to around 45-50 miles. From what everyone says the increase in airflow from the K&N should lean the mixture out some so milage should increase by that theory. That's all dependent on your stock jetting and what your quad "likes". My 400 needs a ton of choke to start and run right(ie it's lean to start with) My 500 hates the choke except to start it when it is dead cold(ie it's rich to start) I know my full size trucks love those filters. good luck to ya. Post us something if you go thru with the filter. I'm interested.

Well with out the use of low range, stock 26" tires, a mud ride, very aggessive trail riding, and the reserve on. I got 102 mines on my 4.25 gallon tank.

Three days of trail riding in WY moumtains, 3 tanks of premium gas, the best the 500ac auto could do was 50mp tank before reserve. Not hard riding, just crusing around sight seeing. Very smooth ride but too much belt noise. The 450es with us got 90 mp tank.

Normally get about 50-60 miles before reserve, but then again, I do a lot of woods riding at extremely low speeds. I have about 1/4 tank on left right now with 30+ miles on it, but I have done nothing but ride in the woods a lot with maybe 20 miles of that tank on dirt roads.

I have found that there is about 2 gallons left in my tank when I switch to reserve. The gas gauge that came with my 99 was way off. It said I was on empty after only 60miles. On average I can get around 90+ miles before refueling. I once ran it completely dry, and I had 109 on the odometer.

I'm hearing some pretty big differences here, from 50 to 100 miles per tank. Girthyguy may be on to something here. Is it possible that the guys getting 50 miles are just going by the guage, but the guys getting 100 miles are really running the tank empty? Could the guages be that much out? This could make a big difference to me for those long hunting trips.

Has anyone heard of any aftermarket oversize tanks for these things? They seem to be available for the desert racer crowd, just wondering if anyone makes them for 4x4s.

I think you are right. I only use my gauge. It's better than nothing. I've gone further than 70 miles but I don't like the sound of an empty tank or a long walk back to the camp/truck. It's like the school buses we have to drive as coaches. If the needle reads any little bit below 1/2 a tank fill it up right then because the first hill you meet will uncover the pickup tube and you're dead in the water. I take the same on my cat. I don't chance it. Maybe they are designed to read a bit low early to save you the frustration.
