A friend of mine call it a "TFL" which he says stands for Theoretical Fuel gauge.

In theory you have 1/4 of a tank of fuel but you actually have 20 miles to travel!

Yea i had that done to me on my 2003 400, we were riding from town to town along the trails in the winter and mine stopped about 4 miles short of the next town. After that I got a 2007 650 with a 6.5 gal tank. Now i shouldn't have nothing to worry about.

Your 650 will burn more gas then your 400 but your carring a extra 1.7 gals now so you will aleast get 25-30 miles of more riding with your 650 for sure. Thats a long ways when you think of it.

My 350 Yamaha (2.6 gal) had a range of 50 miles at best and ran out of gas a few times short from home now I go over 100 miles easily with my 5.25 tank without a extra gas can strapped on for the ride, I love it.

My sled has a 10 gal tank and only gets 120 miles! YEEKs LOL

Maybe its the boy scout in me but I always carry extra fuel on long rides. It paid off last year when my partners ATV (who did not have extra fuel) got his float stuck and fuel was pouring out the overflow and into the air box while he was riding.

He noticed too late and would have had to walk if I did not have some extra fuel. Too far and too ruooughto pull him or ride double. Needless to say I was a good friend and we negotiated a decent price. Although he did comment on how $4 a gallon at the pump seemed low.

Plus a little extra fuel helps get a good fire going to warm your toes up after they get dunked in the creek!

I would guess my old ATV got around 20-30 MPG.

Well my thumb is about as heavy as my ars.... lol So I guess guess I just better be safe, grab a small fuel pack. Looking arounf for a place to put it and am wondering if anyone has ever mounted a tank (can) in the whole under the bacl of the TRV. I have seen people put packs and second batteries in there, but not a small gas tank. Do you thin kthat would be to close to the exhaust?

My immediate response to that is YES!

You have a heat shield already in place to protect your factory gas tank, but it doesn't extend all the way back. Finding a gas can to fit under the rear seat plus secure it and protect it from exhaust heat will be a challenge.

I'd look into ROTOPAX brand fuel packs. http://www.rotopax.com/ They're spendy ($50) but you can get a mount ($40) that should attach to the very rear of the rack that sticks out past the seat. That'll be a safer bet IMHP.

good luck

went riding this weekend at brimstone in TN. First off, that place was great. All the trails were marked and had some nice challenging obsticles. The unfun part is that it rained both days and made for a sloppy mess, which isnt bad if you live nearby, but for us we were camping and had packed all our things about 3 miles into the woods. Anyway, With 28" tires and a clutch kit i ended up getting just about 50 miles to one tank then the bike would start dieing going down hills. made it back and put 4 gallons in so i guess i had about another gallon or so left. I will have extra gas with me next time just incase.
