Welcome to the forum!
I'm admittedly not that familiar w/older AC machines but I belong to a few other on-line forums and I believe you have a few options for your 500:
1. CLEAN YOUR AIRFILTER - yes it's very basic.....but easily forgotten
Your air filter is a "wet" filter. Remove & clean in solvent - air dry - clean w/Dawn dish detergent - blow dry - re-oil (lightly) If your filter is dirty it will "suck power"
2. CLEAN YOUR CARB - see pic attachment
Depending on the mileage and/or your mechanical ability it's not really a hard thing to do. Bad fuel and age tend to gum the carb/jets up something awfull. A quick fix would be to dump SEAFOAM into your gas tank and run thru a few tanks. It will clean the carb pretty good. But if you want to take the next step & go deeper......
This LINK is for re-jetting (also an option).....but will give you a general idea on dissassembly:
Arctic Cat 650h1 Installation Instructions - Page 2 - HMF Engineering Forums
Spray everything down good. If you've got the carb apart after a good soaking with carb solvent/cleaner and sitting on the bench infront of you....+ your pretty confident in a perminant "mod" your carb....... the next step would be:
3.CARB SLIDE MOD
This involves deeper carb dissassembly and removing the carb slide assembly (diaphram/needle/spring) then drilling out the small "breather" hole w/a 1/8" bit on the slide itelf. There's also a spring assembly under the diaphram that can be "clipped" about 1/2".
These mods in combo will give you quicker throttle response & pwr in the lower rpms FYI: (I JUST did this mod - with help - this past wkend on my TRV - A+++)
4. EXHAUST
change out your exhaust to a HMF or other brand (can be Spendy$$) SEE ABOVE LINK. Or get a VERY long drill bit and drill thru your baffles about 1/2 dozen times. This will "let it breathe" but involves cutting into your end plate thus removing it on the muffler, and re-welding afterwards.
5. SNORKEL(s)
add this to the bike as opens up airflow and let it breathe.
6. CLUTCH(s)
have your clutch's re-surfaced and/or rebuilt by AIRDAM.

"Modd'n" these bikes is pretty much endless depending on your mechanical ability and $$$$$. GOOGLE the crap out of mods to your machine. The web is FULL of solutions and/or ideas
For the record : I DO NOT recommend that if you feel your not confident in doing these mods short of basic maintenance.....DON'T DO IT.
Good luck!
