I borrowed a friends Arctic Cat 400 automatic. Before I return it, I want to change the oil. What is recommended? I don't have his owners manual. We live in South Carolina and he just uses the cat around the house & farm.

 

Give him a treat,Amsoil synthetic 0w-40. Any ATV/Motorcycle grade oil will be fine.

 

Any ATV/Motorcycle oil that is "wet Clutch" safe would be fine.

If you look at a local auto parts store you can sometimes find Valvoline ATV/motorcycle oil (I don't remember the viscosity 10w-30 or 10w-40) for about $4 a quart. The 400 takes between 3-4 quarts with a filter change. I have been using this and I am very pleased with it.

Also, if you check at the same auto parts store you can find the filter too. You can use a NAPA 1359, Wix51359 or cross reference either of these to your particular filter brand. (personally I would avoid Fram) Filter usually run $4-6 each. I prefer the premium Wix myself as it is black in color and looks like OEM.

So depending on taxes it should cost you around $25-$30 and take about 15-20 minutes of time to do.

Synthetic oils like Amsoil are good however, they are usually more $. I think it depends on personal preference and how you use the machine. Also its NOT a good idea to be switching an ATV engine back and forth from regular to synthetic oil at each oil change. That can cause some issues with the oil seals. You may want to ask your friend what type of oil he has in it (if he knows) before deciding.

All motorcycle grade oils are for wet clutches, I never heard of a motorcycle without a wet clutch.

 

I haven't seen one either but I didn't want to "they do not make".

I also forgot to mention that if you have a local Arctic Cat dealer they sometimes carry and sell an oil change kit. They run about $35 and have a filter and a gallon of oil.

Not sure, but I think Arctic Cat's OEM 4 stroke oil is a Full synthetic.
