I need help with installing heated grips on my 2006 650 v2
#1
Hi all, I got a pair of aftermarket heated grips for my quad for Christmas. I have a 2006 650 v2. I am not sure where I should run the positive wire to make the grips shut off with the key. I obviously could run to the battery directly, but I know that I would forget to turn off the heat and have a dead battery. I use the quad for plowing with a winch. The instructions say to run to the ignition switch, but I took the switch off the panel, and it appears to be a sealed switch. Any suggestions would really help, and I appreciate them.
Thanks

There should be an accessory fuse in the fuse panel. I think it is marked Acc and I believe it powers the 12v accessory plug.
When installation instructions say to install to the ignition switch. They usually mean to install it to a wire that only gets power when the key is in the ON position not the ignition switch itself.
Only other suggestions I have for you is to make sure you seal any wire connections you make with silicone, use plenty of zip ties to keep wires off the things that will or can melt them like the exhaust.
Also, if your grips have a High, Medium, Low setting I would be cautious operating them on high as it may overtax the charging system and cause the battery to not charge, or burn out the voltage regulator. Especially if you have the grips on High, have your lights on High beam and are running your winch a bunch like you are plowing. This is why some on here install an second battery if they plow a bunch with the ATV.
Hope this helps

If you take the black plastic off on the front just under the pod, there will be an accessory wire there. You might have to dig around for it a bit usually tucked up closer to the pod. It usually has a connector on the end that doesn't lead to anywhere. You can find a matching connector for your grips, or cut the wire and splice your grip wire to it.
This wire is keyed and will only be live with the key on. I use this particular wire for my winch.
Hope this helps somewhat.
