If you can't get above 30mph, then it can't run "good" or have "full power". Something must be wrong.

no boubt, even the 250s hit 50mph. Top speed should be around 50mph. something is wrong. Old gas? spark plug? Carb not clean? run some sea foam in the tank for good measures. belt may be shot. there is a screw on the thumb throttle, did someone screw it in limiting it to only half throttle? air filter clogged(mouse nest)?there are a few things that could keep it from hitting 50mph. these are just a few simple ones to check.

Catterman has a good point, make sure it is in Hi range, or that there is a difference between Hi and Low range, if it seems to have plenty of power, could be its stuck in Low range, that would explain 30 mph top speed, either that or the clutch could be dirty and not closing the sheave all the way to get the ratio up for to speed. Possibly the former owner sunk it and got some mud and gunk in the clutch preventing it from operating all the way open or closed, which would leave you in a lower gear ratio, so it would feel powerful, but have low top end. A quick check for the clutch would be to jack up the back end (make sure you are in 2wd) put the tranny in Neutral or Park, then take the clutch cover off and run it up to full throttle, and see if the sheave takes the belt from the bottom to the top of the sheave, belt should be level or slighty over the top of the sheave at full throttle, the secondary may or may not move, it needs a load on it to cause it to "shift". But if your belt stays down in the sheave, that would explain good power and low speed, you would then need to pull apart the primary and see if it needs adjustment, cleaning, or repair.

it must depend where you are located. I had a 1999 300 that would top out at 52mph, and my 500 would also top out at 52,but much faster getting there of course. 3 friends have the 400,one is a manual shift, and all also hit 50mph. then one 1999 250 2wd that will also do 50mph. my 700 is a bit quicker though.
