Default 2001 arctic cat 250 4x2

hello, everyone, I recently acquired a new toy, looking for some pointers, I needed a little project to keep me busy, the atv starts and runs has 27 inch tires and its lifted got it for 750 bucks, smokes like a chimney though, guy said it needed rings, it sure does, another thing I noticed is oil leaking from the bottom end, one of my trikes did this never seemed to have an issue though, what I am asking is, should I put a whole new set of gaskets in along with the rings? I have never done this kind of thing to an atv before, I cant see it being too hard, I have seen that you need a micrometer compression checker etc are these absolutely necessary? I can get the tools, as my father is a mechanic(ya I know he should be doing it but really busy this time of year), but lives an hour away, anyway, some info would be appreciated, thanks.
