2001 AC 400 4x4
#1
Hey guys !
Rode a cat for the first time today ! I have limited utility quad experience but this I what I concluded. I have ridden a rancher in all varieties and a Kodiak 4x4 and my initial feeling are that this AC is above and beyond the other two. Everything seems very sturdy and functional. My only complaint thus far is the appearance of the handlebars they seem really high. I think it would take my awhile to get the shifting techinique with the toe-heel clickers. It was probably my inexperience with this transmission but it seemed to clunk into gear. Turning this 4x4 was much easier than anticipated and I really liked the idea of high and low range. Chances are we are going to pick up a new cat next week. Is there a way to rig your own Reverse overide button on this quad? After getting off my 400ex acceleration is a little slow
but I was impressed with responsiveness of this 400 & with its performance and value thank you all for leading me in the right direction

You have to remember that thre is no actual disengagement of the clutch like on your EX per se,so you will get a slight clunk. Also if the idle is set too high you'll get a slight clunk when putting it in gear. The handlebars are another thing that can be taken care of, just loosen the clamp bolts and tilt them back a little, it doesn't take much back movement to lower then quite a bit. Lastly, you can have the dealer put on a toe only shifter, I think it's about a $25.00 option. For the slight difference in price thought you might just check out the 500. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input! I will take that advise and further investigate. I am 5'11 and the 400 seems like a good fit and seems a little bit more nimble than the 500 but it is definately worth checking out. The lowest price I have found for the 400 is $4500 and I am pretty comfortable with that price. I will keep you all posted.
Thanks again,

The toe shifter is $20 bucks and there is realy no need to consider a reverse override switch. The reverse is plenty fast enough. I was doing about 15 mph in reverse in a canal one time, I think that is more than fast enough.

I think part of my justification for going with the 400 is that I will be able to afford hunting accessories and a good trailer with the differences in price between the 500's at least at the dealers located around central missouri.
Have a great weekend

Yo uwon't miss the extra displacement of a 500 over the 400 unless to need to tow your house off the foundation. I have a 400 and a 500 and both work great. The reason we got the 400 was the $1000 difference allowed us to get a very nice trailer for the two of them. That's a good idea on your part.

Give the heel toe a week to get used to it, it's much better than a toe, plus your toes don't hang below the bike which makes for an ouch when it catches a stump or rock. Also give those tall handlebars a chance, if your a part time stand-up rider it's much easier on the back, especially on us older guys.
