CV Boot guards
#1
I'm looking at getting some boot protectors for my 99 500, but I can't find anything that states this specific model. The dennis Kirk catalog shows Oxlites for a 98 400. This would seem like the same, but if it isn't I don't want to send the stuff back. I'd rather not have to fool with all the trouble. They also list the Cycle Country ones for a 300 and 454 through the 99 models. Funny thing is, the part number is the same for all models. Oxlite has a different part number for the 98 model 400, 300, and 96-97 bearcat 454. There isn't any information on their websites and the operators at Dennis Kirk don't know anything about applications. Does anyone have these on their bikes, and if so, do you have a part number or the name of the company that you got them from. I want these things pretty soon, but I haven't had much luck in finding something that says 1999 AC 500. I still think the 400 would be the same though, because they use the same frame assembly. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm also going to get a 6"x12" strip of aluminum/foam heat tile for the left rear fender. Man, it gets hot on your leg if you happen to be the passenger.

Andy,
Those boot guards listed for the 400 will work just fine on your 500. The models use the same a-arms so they bolt up exactly the same.
Just as a side note. I heard that Moose was supposed to make some aluminum boot guards. Although I personally haven't seen them.

I got a set of oxlites for a 500 Cat recently they were the ones for the 400 and they did work got them for a guy that rides with us. This was the first Cat I,ve ever ridden seems like a nice machine. Ordered these from Cabelas. Oh they were not Oxlite brand they are called stick stoppers but they seem to be just as good as the oxlite product. If you don,t have a Cabelas Catalog try www.cabelas.com They have a large selection of atv accesories. Hope this is a help.

Thanks guys, I ordered the oxlites today from Dennis Kirk. I also got a 6"x12" strip of foam backed aluminum heat tape to go under the left rear fender. That thing gets pretty dang hot on your leg if you are the passenger. I'll let you guys know how this stuff works out.

I don't know how much the oxlite boot guards were but the stick stoppers from Cabela's are $45 on sale. I put them on my 2000 500 and the '97 and '98 454's, and they worked just fine. I didn't get them from the dealer because they wanted 90 bucks for them.

I think Dennis Kirk had the oxlites for like $39.95. They were cheaper than the Moose Utility or Cycle Country boot guards and looked like they would fit better anyway. I couldn't find my old Cabelas catalog, and didn't want to wait on it in the mail so I just ordered the Oxlites. I was thinking about them a lot today every time I encountered a big limb in the trail pointing right at me.

I got the oxlites in today and mounted them. The left one took a little more time, because the bolt holes weren't lining up right. I had to take it back off and beat on the original boot protector with a hammer to bend it( though I don't think i ever actually bent it any). I put it back on starting with the hardest bolt first and after putting some pressure on the guard, I finally got the last u-bolt to go throught the hole. Took a little time, but I bet it will be on there tight. They look great, the entire bottom is protected, and most of up front. From what I can tell, you couldn't go any further towards the inside of the wheel with them or they would hit the brake housing when you turned tight. I also got that 6"x12" heat tile and stuck it under the rear fender. I don't know how good it will do, but its probably better than without. I know the last time I was riding on back, it was hotter than hell on my left leg. The oxlites are stronger than they look in the catalog. I was expecting them to be made out of thinner steel. These things are heavy. At 39.95, they seem about the best for the money.
