Somebody asked me the other day if I could get my 2001 AC 500 Manual started if the battery died. The owners manual talks about a decompression lever on the 250/300, but didnt say anything about it on the 500. Can a 500 be decompressed to start it manually with the pull rope?

I believe the 500 has automatic decompression release.

I don't think its automatic, because when I went to pull start it I couldn't budge the pull rope one inch.

Has anyone rope pull started a 500?

Cat3608 you need to eat your wheaties or something. The compression release is automatic as soon as you start to pull the starter rope. If yours doesn't budge you may need to check your rope. My 15 year old niece can pull start my cat. Seems like the engine only makes about 3 revolutions and it's going.

The compression release is on the camshaft and is automatic. It only engages on the compression stroke I beleive(not positive), so you might have to pull it past or to the compression stroke then pull VERY hard to get it started. I can normally do this on the first try. Just gotta learn how to do it the first time.)

Boner:

Thanks for explaining the decompression operation for the 500 since the AC operator's manual doesn't explain its operation at all except to pull the rope. After eating my wheaties, I pulled it VERY hard and got it to work. Guess its just like you said you have to learn how to do it for the first time. I was thinking it would be similiar in operation to my old Kawasaki 220 Bayou, but then again Im trying to pull start 500cc versus 220.

PS: UtahRancherRider, you were right. Thanks!
