The best ever atv is pretty easy. I don't and never have owned a sport quad, and I'm going at this in like a Babe Ruth/Michael Jordan type of Best ever. The Honda 250R has to be the best ever. Probably doesn't compete as well in some things as todays stuff, but it set the bar for sport ATV's and is probably the most mythical and most talked about ATV ever.
My favorite? I could jump the bandwagon and say the 660 Grizzly, cause I will need one soon, but to back up for a bit, I would have to say the Banshee. Its dated, it gets beat by a lot of quads in a lot of area, but it has been here for a long time, and was the one choice new machine for people through a long drought when nobody else dared to manufacture a true sport ATV. Namely, from 1991- 1998.
I couldn't find a favorite utility. I liked the 97 Grey Kodiak as far as looks go, and probably the 660 Grizz is going to have to be my favorite, even if it just had the old 600 motor in it. Everything I'm looking for in a quad, less the automatic, but it comes close enough.

Here are my favorites:
Sport: 300EX (because I have one)
High Performance: Honda 250R (the benchmark to all new high performance models, to me the 400EX is just a 4-stroke copy of the 250R)
Sport-Utility: Kawasaki Prairie 400 4x4 and Honda Recon (I have only ridden these 2 and the Honda Rancher. I like the Rancher but its jumping abilities weren't that great, they werent bad, just not the best, power was good though.)
Although it may seem that I am biased towards Honda I'm not, I like a lot of other models to. My dad has owned an ATV from almost every manufacturer.

The Honda 250R is the best all time ATV ever produced. It's the only ATV that sells for twice the cost today than it did back then. Most people prefer the 88/89 models. It's frame and suspension geometry are the most copied today. They are the most awesome bike to ride and the handling is great.
For the best quad in production today. I would have to say the Canondale 400 for a sport. It has great suspension, fuel injection, and handles great too. For a utility market I would have to say the Polaris Sportsman 500HO. Very versitle machine. can crawl with the best of them but when it's time to get up and go it will do that too!!!

I WOULD SAY FOR SPORT 250R
FOR BEING A VERY LONG LIVING 4X4 300 HONDA FOURTRAXS
BIG-BORE 4X4(500 CC ) ARTIC-CAT
I AM WAITING TO SEE THE NEW BIKE PROBLEMS,BEFORE I JUMP ON THE YAMAHA OR KAW. BAND-WAGON.HOW FAST PEOPLE FORGET THE PROBLEMS OF NEW MACHINES ESP WHEN IT IS TOTALLY NEW CONCEPT FOR A MANUFACTURE.
THATS JUST MY OPINION BECAUSE I HAVE BEING BURNED BEFORE FOR WANTING THE NEWEST AND SUSPOSED BEST AT THE TIME.
