I've read on the bombardier forum that the 2001 AC 500 has a locking front diff and will do close to 55mph. Is this true because my buddies 2000 AC 500 does not and will only do rougly 48mph, he says.
I'm just wondering because a front locker is awesome to have. That is the only thing my Grizz needs.

3500 km's and not a hickup.

It is has a limited slip front diff, which works ok until you get one front tire off the ground, then the tire with the least amount of traction will spin unless you jab the front brakes, you just have to be carefull doing this I have blown up CV joints in vehicles doing this. As far as speed I got my 2001 500 Auto Cat up to about 54mph on the road.

Okay just checking because the guy under the bombardier forum said his 2001 had a locking front diff.
Thanks that's what I thought too, I know it has a 2wd option now.

Ah yes....Mr. YAM,

My front end on my 2001 AC 500 manual DOES lock with stock tires...EVEN tho it is a limitred slip. know when i put my 28 outlaws on...it turns into a limited slip (not like that POS grizzly front diff but like the ranchers/rubi front differential). know when i have the 28s on...and i have 1 tire on the ground and the otehr in the air... the one of the ground sits there (this is with the 28 outlaws) but when i nail the throttle...the front end locks up pullin me out of wheatever i was in.

And if the YAM kid would have kept readin what i said...i wrote that it locks with my STOCK tires...NOT with the 28 outlaws.

And yes...my AC will do 60-61mph on a straight away (that is what the speedo reads) and i will have picks of me doing this FASINATING (spell) thing to shut Yammer guy up!

If you are hitting 60 on an AC, then don't bother getting a GPS. It will burst your bubble something fierce. I used to peg mine at 59, and hit 60 at times, and then I used the GPS on it. Can you say 52 being good, and 53 being the best, and only on rare occasions? Yeah the speedo still read high, but the actuallity of the situation was enough to make me scream SPORTSMAN at the time. The best GPS reading I ever got was downhill and that hit 57 for just a second and then went back to 56. AC's are not speedsters, but they can hang with 450's and such. My cousin's 454 will show 59 with stockers while running alongside mine with 27" tires and my speedometer showing 53. The AC speedometers are not accurate at all. Whether it be a 98 or a 2001 model. Sorry man.

i totally aggree with u Andy...practically all speedos on ATVs are inaccurate. Thats why i do not trust them. (i stated this same statement in the bombardier forum) but i have a pic of me nailin 60mph on the head (even tho it isnt accurate)

Andy, I have to disagree with you on the speedo a little. My 2000 400 reads pretty close according to my gps and the top speed on the flat is 55MPH. The top end on mine will vary from 48 to 55MPH depending on which air filter I am using and how my carb is set. I have also checked the speedo at other speeds as well and it is pretty close [+/- 2MPH.

Cheers Jim

I have a buddy with a 2000 AC500 Auto. He and I went out riding together a couple of months ago and I got to watch his front dif work. I would call its function closer to a "locker" then a limited slip. There were times when he could get one front wheel turning, but just a blip on the throttle had both front wheels "locked" in, and it pulled him through everytime. He has 27" bi/tri claws on his "cat. That worked whether the opposite tire was in contact with the ground or not. In fact there were two times when he had one front tire completely off the ground, he just tapped the throttle a little and both front wheels locked in and pulled him through. That was before I locked the front end on my Griz, and I was totally jealous! Because before I locked it up, if I lifted one front wheel off the ground, it became a 2WD. Three wheel drive my ***! When I have one front wheel spinning helplessly in the air, I've only got two wheels pushing me!
