Makes sense Boner about the suspension. You're probably correct

hey dude , Mark Im sorry you feel i was biase in my statment , But i owned both quads I was trying to be honest , I bought a suzuki because i liked IT , But I didnt like being screwed by a suzuki dealer or suzuki either , I may buy a suzuki powered quad , But a quad built buy them will never set on my LAND AGAIN , The quad was great , not as good as the AC sorry if you dont like it, but that is my thoughts, My AC dealer has been great so far , and so has the quads , buy the way you dont like the weight of a AC. My 2000 issue of dirt wheels buyer guide says a king quad weights 606 pounds& a 2000 AC300 4x4 weights 585 pounds , woops , CHUNKY

Hey Chunk,
The biased remark was tongue-in-cheek, on both sides.

Although I'm a DirtWheels subscriber, I don't put much stock in what they say. Have you read the Feb 2002 issue yet? On page 78, the caption for the pic at the top of the page says "Be prepared with richer jets to adjust the carb jetting on your ATV for the higher altitudes." It's leaner dude.

The Suzuki web site says 599 lbs for the KQ.

<< My only gripe with Cats is that they are heavy >>

I made a general statement that Arctic Cats are heavy. Compare most models and you'll agree. The AC 375 4x4 weighs more than the Eiger 4x4, the AC 250 4X4 weighs more than the 250 Quadrunner 4x4, etc. down the line, EXCEPT for the 300.

Sorry about your trouble with your Suzuki dealer. They aren't all like that.

Mark

markdf,

You can change parts in the motor with out changing the entire motor itself. You can make higher compression pistons to replace stock pistons, as is already widely done threw out the automotive industry.

Anyway, I am VERY surprised at your (no disrespect intended) lack of knowledge about the King Quad/AC300's engine and transmission being a unit. They are almost identical except for a few key differences.

But accoding to the specs you gave me, there gears are identically geared. How about checking the sub transmission, or "Secondary-Transmission Reduction Ratios"

High= 1.112
Low = 1.480
Sup/L= 3.176

I expect these to be identical, but it don't hurt to check.

Would you like to compare the camshaft and cyclinder head Specifications next??

Boner,
No disrespect taken. I'm aware of the integrated engine/tranny on the KQ, just not on the Cat. One question though, did AC ever make an automatic 300? I remember seeing an older AC300 at the National ATV Jamboree last year, and for some reason thought it was an auto.

From my previous post:

<< I'm the first to admit I'm not an expert on Artic Cats, but isn't the 300 an automatic? Do they make one that's an auto-cluth foot shift model? >>

That's one of the reasons I bought the KQ, I figured less moving parts with the integrated unit. Seems to work.

I agree with you about the different pistons, heads, etc.; so if AC does change them after they get them from Suzuki, I don't think you can say the engine is totally the same, in the strict sense. Again, that's a point I was trying to make in my previous post.

I'll check the secondary ratios tonight and post what they are.

No need to check camshaft for my benefit, etc., this could get out of hand. But if you're serious about knowing, I'll look them up for you. I suspect the engines are the same since the compression ratios are the same.

I'm sensing you guys are reading more into this than you should. I never said I didn't like AC. Seems like ChunkyBoy got that impression. I did say that I like the KQ and was posting a differing opinion.

Mark! I didn't read any of your post that might have suggested you have a Vinson, before now. How do you like the auto tranny and weight distribution on the trails? I would probably look at it as a compliment to the KQ but I prefer the shifter tranny, which Suzuki, didn't do for the Vinson.
My dealer has received five AC 500i, yesterday. One shifter and the others, automatic trannys. He's going to call me as soon as the shifter unit is put together. Haven't riden the thing and I think it's going to be the one. I did sit on an Eiger at the dealer and like the style but I decided on more engine and independent suspension. You have three quality machines.

Hi Chuck,
I like the Vinson a lot. It has lots of power and speed. In fact, During a ride this fall,I found myself thinking I was wasting the speed because most of the stuff I ride is real rough. I can only do 15-25 mph safely most of the time. On the rare occassions that I'm riding dirt roads, it screams.

I honestly have to say I miss the independent suspension the KQ has. The Vinson has lots of suspension travel, so that makes up some for the swingarm rear. You asked about weight distribution, I'm not sure what you meant. I haven't had any problems in the rock fields, off-camber trails, or steep stuff. It powerslides easily. One thing I had to accept is that since it's supposed to be "sport/utility", I don't think it's as rugged as the KQ as far as frame, protection, skid plate is plastic, more exposed internals, etc.

I had never owned an automatic before, it takes some getting used to. The Vinson is a high rev'ver (is that a word? ). Autos are a no-brainer to ride though. The engine braking of the Vinson is great. It's better than I expected it to be. I'm thinking of getting my girlfriend an auto soon. I'm not sure what model though. She thinks too much about shifting and when to shift, tranny ranges, etc. She says if I get her an automatic, then she won't have to listen to me yell at her. Can you believe that?

I don't think you can go wrong with the AC500i. Does the 500i have the Vinson's higher compression 493cc engine? I think it uses the lower compression engine from the QuadRunner 500, but I'm sure someone on this forum knows for sure.

I find the suspension travel of the 500i real attractive, but not the weight. I also wonder about the seat height/center of gravity with the 12" of ground clearance. I think these things are compromises the manufacturers have to make.

Good luck on your choice. Are you still keeping the KQ?

Mark

The 500i uses a 9:1 compression ratio that is slightly higher than the 8.5:1 ratio of the Quad Runner, but much lower than the 10.25:1 compression ratio of the Vinson. The Vinson also uses a 36 mm carb, different cam profile, and POSSIBLY an aluminum head (anyone know about this one??).

The Quadrunner and AC both have 34 mm carbs, but I believe the AC is the only one with an Acelerator pump, but I encourage anyone that can prove me wrong to please speak up.
