checking the valve clearance? Is it a relatively easy thing to do? What tools are required and how long does it take? What are you checkig for?

Thanks in advance.

NeWf, they change your oil & filter, and ajust your valves and carb on your first service.I think our manual said something about not using a synthetic oil if you have a man. transmission could cause the clutch to slip.

You can use a synthetic blend but not a pure synthetic. I use quaker state 4x4 synthetic blend 10w40.

oh i see.. you can get the blends.. i was under the impression that something like quaker state 4x4 was plain synthtic. I heard people on here saying they use it. heck i didn't know there was such thing as blends.. shows what i know.

The valve adjustment isn't that hard. The 250 and 300 is simple takes about 1/2 hour. But the 400 and 500 possibly the 375 also is a little bit harder to get to. You need to take the gas tank and side plastic off. This is a good time to regrease your steering stem bushing too. I would recomend getting a service manual before diving in if you are not familiar with such service. But if you can read and do basic service work it is nothing to be scared of. I usually check the 500s that I have had at around 500 - 600 miles, they are not loose but tight after this amount of time. They do run and start better after adjusting them. If you don't do this you run the risk of burning a valve or ruining a seat. But wait until about 500 miles before you do it that way you won't need to do it again for quite some time. I did my 98 500 at 600 miles and checked them again at a little over 3000 and they were still right on. If you have any more questions I will see if I can help you.
