1st service??

Does anyone know exactly what is done for a manual on its first service? Is it okay to put synthetic 10 w 40 in now when it is at 220 miles? Sorry for all the questions but we won't be able to get the cat to the dealer for its first service so i want to know what has to be done. Any help would be great.

The first service is supposed to include your first oil change (don't use pure synthetic oil use a blend). You can pick up an oil filter at a local parts store. the Fram is #6018. there are other brands too just do a search on the forum.
Clean your air filter. Get a foam filter cleaner and a good filter oil (I use UNI products, but PJ1, Twin Air are some others) Don't use gasoline or anything else to clean the filter These products will cause the foam to seperate from each other and the base.
Check your diff fluids. They should be at the proper level and fill them with a quality ATF oil.
Check your radiator level (Use a quality anti-freeze). If you want your engine to run cooler then get some water wetter.
Check your valve clearence. This requires some special tools. If you don't know how I would recommend taking it to the dealer. Some of the magazines will do an article on how this is done. You could also call your dealer.
Check for any leakage or signs of abnormal wear. Make sure everything else is in proper working order.

vewdew, the oil filter should be the same as the 375 and all 400 and 500 Cats. There are aftermarket oil filters for your Cat I use the Framm PH 6018 I believe stp has one smo 18. There are others but can't remember them right now, you can do a search and find out. It is ok to use a semisynthetic oil, or a oil that is wet clutch safe. I use amsoil after I get 500 plus miles on them, they make a synthetic oil that is wet clutch safe.
I would recomend holding off on getting the valve adjustment done until you get 500 miles on you quad. This way you probably won't have to do it again.

Thx Mudcat, this machine has 1100 miles on it now. I have put 350 on it since ive had it. The valves seem to be tapping more than i like. But this could just be the nature of the engine. There is no record of when they were done last, i can only hope it was all checked when this machine had its first service from the dealer. They changed all fluids at 750 but did not touch the valves. Im thinking it will be safe to change the oil every 350 or so considering the amount of riding i do.
