Real 4X

I own a 99 AC4004X and I am disappointed with the front diff. The dealer told me it was an actual locking differential when I bought it, but I have discovered it is just a limited slip. I was wondering if any aftermarket companies make a locking diff for this machine, or if possibly the front axle setup from a 300 would be able to be adapted to this machine. I appreciate any advice.

I am pretty sure that only the 300 has the locking diff. The larger cats do not have this luxury. I wish they did. I haven't found it to be very much of a problem without it though. Especially with a winch on it. Someone on here said their was no way to adapt it either. They may also be wrong.

Catman- the dealer you talked to has no clue what he is talking about. Most of the time you need to talk to the mechanic or someone like that. That's what I did when we bought our AC. Four Play I have heard it is not very hard to do, but I do not know how to go about doing this.

The 300 front differential is the same as on the King Quad, which of courses has 2wd, 4wd and 4wd lock.
If you look at the front diferential (left side) where the cable attaches you will find a lever that engages 4wd. If you were able to continue to move the lever forward you would engage the lock. However Artic Cat lever/cable design does not allow it.
This is all done on the front differential.
What you have to do is note the position of the lever in 2wd, then place the front end in 4wd,
then take the lever off and move it to the 2wd position. Then you will be able to engage the lock. Please note that this will give you only 4wd and 4wd w/lock. You will no longer
have the option of using 2wd.
If you could figure out how to extend the cable you might be able to have all three..
My description is basic but hopefully helpful.
I will try scan a picture of the front differential and email it. If you have any questions let me know.
