Default gps mount alternatives??

I've been looking for a good way to mount my gps. I have the Garmin Venture. I can not see paying $50 or $60 for a plastic mount. There has to be a cheaper better way. I would rather fabricate a mounting system then pay these outrageous prices!!! I'm going to try industrial strength Velcro. Anyone used Velcro? What are you guys mounting up with? I need to brain-storm a bit!!

Hail fangoELgato: Theres a Company called RAM mounts www.ram-mount.com that makes awesome mounting kits for gps, radios, laptops, handguns, pdas, etc. This mounting system is the best I've ever seen, you'll spend in the $40 - $50 range but these are not cheap plastic mounts,....this system is rubber ***** injected molded on marine grade aluminum post, vibration resistant, strong, and very easy to use, don't waste your time fabricating a mount, this quality mounting system is worth every penny.

Default gps mount alternatives??

I am familiar with Ram products, but I don't like how they stick up off the handle bars.

I don't feel that fabricating anything is a waste of time. I enjoy the processes. That is how concepts are born. Yes it may be easier to just buy somebody's product but what FUN is that in the grand scheme of things.

When you have a great resource such as this forum to brain storm with others why not try to create rather then buy??

Thank you for your response. I think the Ram products are good, but I am looking for an "alternative"...

I have used Velcro. Works fine. I have a windsheild on my machine, took some 1 inch by 1/8 flatstock and made a bar from the two windsheild brackets.Took some 1by1 angle iron and made a case for my Garmin 12XL screwed that to bar, worked pretty good, a little vibe. When I upgraded to a Garmin GPS3+ i used a Garmin mount on the bar. Velcro was easier and quicker.I put it on the tank, have to drop eyes from trail only problem.

I made a mount for my Cat for my Garmin e-trex. I believe there are some pics of it in my photo album. I made a center mount headlight bracket and just ran a piece of pipe off of it. Then used the Garmin handlebar mount. This worked great. It was mounted right beside the speedo and just a little lower. I rolled my Cat down a hill at Windrock several times. Busted the speedo and bent the handlebars but the e-trec survived.

Thanx guys, not bad ideas!!

Mudcat I like your setup. Have you had any vibration problems? Has your GPS dropped out of the mount at all??

Anybody else out there with unique mounts??

It has never come out of the mount and we ride some rough trails. It suvived rolling 4 times with 2 other quads when the speedo got busted. I know it would never come off unless I wanted it to. As far as the light it came from Tractor supply auto zone sells the exact same, the cost is less than $15. I make the mounts myself, That one is made out of steel but the last 10 I have made out of alluminum. I have been selling them through my Cat dealer and people I meet on the trail. It really helps as far as lighting, we all know the Cat lights have some room for improvement. I have it wired into the high beam and only comes on when they are on. I have seen people wire them with a switch and even a cig plug to go in the acc socket. Everyone I rode with said it looked like a barge light on it. It was bright and turned with the bars. It is a trapozoid pattern for the beam. I tried a spot and a fllod and this worked the best by far.
If anyone needs one of these or wants to make their own I can help with instructions or I even have some brackets left.
