Ispoke with my dealer about this problem several months ago and he said that the quad didnt come with the indicator because as of right now there was no way to put an sensor in the transmission to indicate gear selection. Sounds like a lot BULL but that is the answer that I got.

I find that hard to comprehend, my 98 did not have one but I was able to buy one from dealer and install it my self. It was a rubber piece with lights in it that fit into the dash, a wireing harness with a connector. The insructions were very clear, ran harnness down under tank, plugged them into the connector that was there and away I went. Happy!!

So, is it possible to put a gear indicator light on a 400i manual 4X4? I would really like to do this.

I have the same problem. NO INDICATOR LIGHTS. I asked by dealer about it (Nice guy). He also said that there was no provision to hook into the tranny. Why? I don't know. the 300's and the 500's have them.

Both of my 02's have indicators, makes no sense to me why they wouldn't. Are'nt they all the same motor and tranny? Don't know where it's hooked to but i'll look tonight.

I have not been able to look at an 03 400, but I can tell you what to look for.

If you look by your starter you will find a round sensor with a wire loom coming out. Follow those wires and it should end with six wire going into a plug with only one wire coming out. If you unplug this and then using a test light, hook the clip of the tester to the positive side of the battery and test each one of the 6 wires. The first wire that makes the tester light will be the neutral. After you find that one, shift into first gear and test the 6 wires again. Do this thru all the gears.

If this works, Then the biggest cost is the LED panel. If it does not work, then you will also need to purchas a sending unit. Either way, It CAN be done!
