the 03 400 is a differant motor than the 02's. the new 400 used to be the 375 which was only avalible as an auto so the must have forgot the gear indicator when the turned it in to a manual.

Gear indicator? Gawd why? If the engine is lugging, gear down. If it's screaming, gear up......nuff said.

DaveB,

I agree, but the ATV we bought is ridden by a lot of people who do not understand that if she is screaming shift up and if she is lugging, you shift down. I was too stuborn to buy an auto, because I did not think they should be riding it in the first place.

my 400 could use a 6th gear it winds out pretty high in fifth at full bore. and at the atv pulls it is always nice to look down and double check what gear you are in so you don't embareass yourself or your machine.

Another guy who says you don't need something they've never had. I wouldn't own a wheeler without a gear indicator. Anybody remember the # of times you shifted into neutral on a hill?

Ill have to agree with that. Ya for the most part i know what gear im in. But the indicator is a must have for me. I dont get why it isnt on these machines with the manual tranny. Makes no sense.

Easy, Tiger. I'm a surveyor by trade and I've ridden every quad ever made by man! Plus I've personally owned several over the years. I may have popped it into neutral once or twice over the years, but generally, if its a steep hill I made damn sure I'm in low range before I attack the hill........most of the time I'll go up in 3rd or 2nd.....first gear, low range is such a crawl, you KNOW there is no lower gear.

Now, I'm not denying that a machine to be used by rookies or renters may need a gear indicator, but all you guys with more than a couple of seasons under your belts, common! Do you look at the shifter on your car/truck when you shift gears? Do you gear down from 1st into reverse on your car/truck if you don't look at the shifter? When I first looked at the a/c and saw the indicator lights I had to chuckled a bit. But after ridding with them for a wile I have grown to like them allot! Are they necessary? No.. but I would definitely miss them if I did not have them.

I realize I'm resurrecting a long-dead thread here, but has anyone figured out whether this is possible? I have a 2003 Arctic Cat 400 with semi-auto (manual) trans and was wondering if there are any options for adding a gear indicator to this year/model?
