Default Help!!! ATC 110 Engine Swap+Problems=uh oh...!!

Hello all

I have a 1985 ATC 110 that the engine took a jump off the deepend... I bought a new engine off ebay... The problem is that the engine that came off ebay is not a CDI (electronic ignition) unit... It has a stator and points...

Can someone please help me... and tell me how to wire this engine into my electronic ignition bike... Do I have to get a new coil exc...?? I can get spark from the stator to to points...but not out of the coil....

I have two wires coming out from under the flywheel a yellow and a black.

There is one wire coming from the points... just hanging there!!

There are two terminals on the coil... A green and black...

I have tried every combination on earth to try to make it work... and I could not make it work~! I must be doing something wrong!!

Thank you to anyone who can help! Feel free to email me at Hproduction38@aol.com with your sugestions~!

This has always been a problem with swapping 110 engines.

What you are trying to do cannot be done. The stator does not produce what is needed for the CDI ignition and the stator from a CDI engine will not fit onto the crankshaft of the points model engine.

You have only have two options....

[1]Sell your points engine for what you can and try to find the later model

[2]Find the entire wiring harness for the older 110 engine.

The guy sent the harness with the engine... I just do not know where everything goes!~! I know its all color matched.... but there are more connections than wires... There are two wires coming out from the stator... how do I know which one goes to the coil...and which one goes to the points... And then the wiring coming out of the points goes where...I am assuming that the coil... if it can be used has one hot wire...and a ground... Correct?

AHHHHHHH!!!!

Will the CDI coil work with the stator ignition?

Thank you for your help~

Well, white goes to the points and green goes to the coil.

The CDI coil will work on the engine you are installing, but only if the coil he sent you has a remote mount condenser. The early points models had a coil that had the condenser made to it. If this is the type of coil the guy sent you, you have to use his oil and your's will not work.

If he sent you a coil without the integral condenser, do you even have a condenser??

He did not send me a coil. All I have is the harness. I do not know if I have a condenser... Ahhh... This is going to drive me crazy. The coil I have is a sealed "package" The wire for the spark plug is molded into the coil. There are two terminals coming out of the coil. Is there a way for me to tell if I have a condenser...? The coil is very small... Granted... a condenser is not that big of an item~ Anyway... Thank you so much for your help... Hopefully I will be able to make this thing run with your help~! I am sorry I seem so lost with this whole thing... My expertise is in racecars... With crankfire ignition!! Very simple... I spent 200 bucks on this engine and I really want to make it run so I can use it for a pit bike!!

Thank you thank you~

You don't have the condenser it seems.

It's about the diameter of a nickel and about 1 1/2" long.

You need to get this before going any further. Once you have it, all the wiring connections will be a breeze.

It shouldn't be hard to find one if you look at the motorcycle salvage yards. Lots of 110 parts lying around those places.

I live in a pretty urban area and a cycle junkyard......might be pretty rare... Do you know any place I could get one... I am seeing some on ebay from like "goldwings" and CL 350's... Is this the same condenser... Where does it mount?

They will not work. Each condenser has different outputs based on the electrical system on each bike, however, that's not to say that something somewhere would work....I just don't know which one.

Look for a coil for a 1970 to 1978 ATC90 or 1979 to 1981 ATC110.

After you find one, be sure it has the condenser made to it.

The condenser/coil combo is much easier to find than the odd ones that were seperate pieces.
