Default Exhaust Question

Got an 85 250es. Finally got a nice awesome quality OEM exhaust to replace the 10 time repaired old rusted one. It doesn't quite line up though...Guy said it was off an 86...#'s match...anyway, I've tried a few times installing it and every time I get a leak at the connection to the header pipe...How much of a leak if any is acceptable here? Think I gotta grind an 1/8" of the female end to get'er to go but before I take a nice OEM part to the grinder, figured I'd ask the experts. Also, I seem to have better performance now...but I just checked the plug and it looks carbonned up...is it normal to adjust mixture on carb when replacing exhaust?
Thanks

Did you use a new gasket between the muffler and head pipe?.......if so maybe you can notch the mounting holes a little to allow the muffler to move around to the propper placement. And if you replace a stock muffler with a stock muffler there should be no reason to adjust your mixture unless your last muffler was just a hollow piece of crap, then you might be running a little rich due to the new backpressure.

Default Exhaust Question

drummerguy, backpressure in a 4 stroke helps torque, idle, and throttle response. in dragsters, they are meant to run wide open throttle and only for short periods of time. running with no exhaust causes the exhaust valve to heat up, and this will lead to detonation, but its ok for short times. also, i think larger, multi cylinder engines are less prone to this type of detonation. im no expert, but id be real interested in hearing from someone with more experience, knowledge on this...always learning......

true...but I mean...even mt dads harly..it has straight pipes..lol...my bros mustang..he broke in the engine w/ just 1 foot of pipes!...lol...I know 2 strokes need it...but I dont think it makes a WHOLE lot of diffrience for a 4 stroke...but Im sure its noticeable..otherwise no one would be doing it..
