250sx carb rebuild
#1
hello all, rebuilt the carb on my 250sx..runs great only with the choke on. without the choke, it bogs at anywhere past half throttle, but idles fine(there are no restrictions in the main jet, float, or fuel supply) i did notice that there was a jet that was loose, and didnt look right where it was. its the first jet at the airbox end of the carb. maybe it wasnt in there right to begin with....anyone have a diagram of this carb?----the actual jet that screws in fine, but this peice was inside where that jet screws into..loose and moving around....i also need a gas tank for this beast...anyone have a good source?

odysseyjunk,
sounds like your air'fuel mixture is out of wack. i have an '85 250sx i just rebuilt the carb on and i had to adjust it several time to get it right. when i first started it up it was much like yours sounds. it barely craweled until half throttle. warm up the engine then turn the pilot screw in until the engine sounds a little rough, then turn it out until you hear it miss again....you should center it between the two extremes which is usually 2 turns out from the first extreme. good luck, ride safely.

as for the gas tank, call als snowmobile parts wharehouse. they deal specifically in snowmobiles and atvs. their prices are about half of oem and are the same if not better. they will sell you a brand new plastic gas tank for$150. it looks just like the original except the gas cap is taller because it screws on and it has a stabalizer bar that runs across the top of the front valve cover on the motor. if you want a metal tank like oem, it will cost you about $400. i priced mine at a local dealership and they said it would cost a little over $400. i don't remember the exact price. als snowmobile parts wharehouse phone number is 1-802-487-1000 and they are based out of Newport, Vermont. hope this helps.

i'm gonna try the same thing on my 250sx. i'm gonna put a 300 big bore kit in at the same time though. i am gonna build my own exhaust around the FMF Titanium 4 muffler because it flows and sounds good, plus i can't find a true performance exhaust. let me know how the 300ex carb works and how it fits. i've heard they use the same throttle cable, so that should make it easier. plus, you can make more room by getting rid of the choke cable. the 300ex carb uses a lever choke. let me know how it turns out and what kind of work you had to do.
