Good day all !!
Been lurking for a while and it's time to jump in...
Bought a house in august last year, and it came complete with an 82 atc 200, barely running, aparently it had been ridden the year before .. ( on 15 year old oil .. ugh.. ) and in rough shape..
I changed the oil, plug, cleaned the air filter, pumped up the cracked tires *( sun dried.. but lots of rubber left.. ) the tank had a leak and the carb was a mess...
This was the start of an obsession... since this thing needs ALOT of tlc, i figured i'd park it for a while and get one that runs.
For 500 $ got my hands on an 84 big red 200 es.. in fair shape.
so far,, changed crank oil, shaft oil, plug, pressure washed it, swaped back tires from the 82, the nut was different size but the shafts were the same.. phew.. patched both fenders using red crazy-carpets ( close match in color and durable !!!!! for anyone needing to keep the mud out ! )
She starts great, electric start is a god send. !! but when i hit the gas i hear a " clunk " before she moves, goes great mind you, all gears, high-lo, reverse .. even when on the move, when you hit the gas it makes a noise from the motor/shaft aerea..
Is there anything that can go wrong, or any maintenance to be done to the shaft drive system that i'm not aware of ?
and
Q2: will the front wheel/rim/brake assembly from the 82 fit my 84 front end ? 82 has no shocks.. the 84 does !! I'm gonna find out soon, but if anyone knows and can shed some light it would be great !! the reason for the change is i got a new tire on the 82, and the 84's tire is GONE.. like bald as a baby's ***.

Well..
took the beast out for my 1st real ride last night !!!
Holy crap this thing is fun !
It goes anywhere my friend with a forman 350 goes, and loves mud !
It wanted to stall a few times when i got to a dead stop in 1st gear, so i tuned the idle screw a notch to make it idle a tiny bit faster.. sems to help the revs quite a bit too !!
tires kept air, and the klunking noise was not a real problem after all... might just be her age i guess.
oh.. and she tops out at about 75 km/h.

The clunking noise that you are talking about could be coming from the front of the shaft, Up by the motor there is a U-joint on that shaft. Could be a little on the worn side being 20 years old and all.

yeah, it does seem to come from there, the clunkin noise.. hopefully she'll hold up for a while longer.. it's not that bad, but a concern none the least. Those available ? and expensive ?
and yes. 75... Pinned, i won't be doing it to her very often, i assure you all, but she needed her throat cleared. !!! LOL.... and going by friends tach from his honda foreman, so might be slightly off, more or less a few km/h's.
The motor is in VERY good shape tho, no smoke at all, from start, to all revs.. i'll get some snaps of her later tonight if anyone wants to see my krazy carpet workmanship !.....hahahahahaha
