I just aquired an 87 Big Red. The engine is stuck, it was susposedly running good and was flipped over and after this locked up. the oil in the engine looks good. any ideas as to what could have caused it to lock, things I should check before tearing into the engine?? I read elsewhere in this thread that the kickstarter caused one to lock, is this possible.

I also have a 1987 trx 250x fourwheeler that is locked up will any of the 250x parts interchange with the 250es to give it more power, like the piston, cam, carb, head etc?? whats the difference in HP in these two engines?

 

Is the tranny locked up or the motor?
will it go into neutral,... and youre able to push it with out resistance?
Im assuming you mean the motor. Pull the spark plug out and look it over. Full of oil? will it turn over with out the plug installed?

 

I am assuming its the motor, however I just looked at for a few minutes, and havent brought it home yet. the spark plug was out of it when I saw it, I didnt try shifting it or pushing it, I did step on the kick starter and it wouldnt budge.

 

With the spark plug out already...I wonder how long its been out. Could be lots of things...from rusty rings, to broken gear in tranny. I hope youre not paying very much for it.
See if itll go into neutral, and if the engine will spin then. You may want to sdquirt some oil down the plug hole, and try spinning it without a spark plug installed.

 

A guy is trading me this 3 wheeler and 150.00 for a 1987 xr80 dirtbike I have long long out grown, but it does run good.

 

if it flipped over and stayed running while flipped. it could of cause the rod to get stuck on the crank while there was no oil supplying the crank rod, the bearing washers might of cracked or broken off, because thats what happned to a 200x that i have and got stuck.

 

I played with it a little today, looked at the tag, its an 87 bigred, not 85, when trying t o push it, I could not get it to come out of gear,the shifter would click and it felt like it was shifting but never would come out, it would roll when the shifter was up or down, but not when you release it, tried prying on the shifter with a small bar, and something popped, then it started rolling freely, but now it wont go back in gear and the motor still wont budge

 

I am pretty sure the trouble is in the bottom end or transmission. Does any body know a good place to get a good bottom end/tranny and what should I expect to pay for one?
