yup 165 should acually be rich for your motor, sooo my guess is that you have a bad cranks seal.

180 seems extremely rich. I'd definiately look into a leak down test, cause like stated above, it will cause you to run lean and cause damage.

a procedure you use to check A/F in the cyilnder. sure it isnt 100%, but its a lot better than winging it.

basically you do a full throttle pull for a couple of seconds and kill the bike. roll to stop and pull the plug and check for rich or lean. unfortunately this only shows accurate readings for your main jet settings. low and mid section i usually try to stay out of anyways but the power comes up very clean on my bike which usually indicates good jetting but also a motor will start to make more power when its becoming lean to a certain point. its a game of cat and mouse. best thing to do is check with your engine builder and other riders to there success and disaster stories.

you guys think there might be a crank case leak?

ok, its been a while but i talked to esr and they rebuilt my engine. They too say my engine has to be leaning out. I asket them about the bad seal and they said that would make it idel bad and it is ideling good. They say its one of two things and they dotn know which one, its either fuel or timming.

So my questions are, what would make my fuel mixture lean other then bad jetting, what octane gas should i run. Is it pre ignition that might cause the piston to blow, and what about the cdi, they said if its old the timming will be off on the the top and that might cause this, if that might be it, where can i get a new cdi

your spending too much $$$$ on your engine, go to ebay and buy a good running 250r engine with carb for cheap. thats what my brother did to one of the 250r's i have, he bought the engine for 1000 bucks and runs mint, and the old engine that was installed ceased up too and repairs were like 1500 and above he told me. up to you.

Do the leak down test first. Can't do that over the phone.
