Default Coil question for 200X owners

Has anyone replaced their coil on the '83-'85 Honda 200x with an ignition coil other than a OEM replacement, like from a different model?

Thanks Jeff

There's got to be another coil out ther that will work. I'd "think" an XR200 coild would do the trick....who knows though.

Default Coil question for 200X owners

Well here is what my weekend of searching yielded;

A site that sells replacement coils for many atvs had OEM coils listed 'while supplies last' and their 'own' coils listed as an exact replacement(for $17 and it looked like about $17 worth). So I took their OEM pic and enlarged it and changed the contrast so I could read the numbers on it and it was a TEC coil with the numbers AS41-CDI, so I checked my 200x coils and the numbers on them was BS41-CDI.

While doing a TON of searching I found that the coil from the HONDAS CB125, XL500R, ATC 185, ATC 200,
and even the NH80 aero scooter has the coil with the number AS41-CDI on them and I'm sure others do as well but when I looked up the part numbers and availability of the coils themselves the part numbers were all different with all coils priced differently with some discontinued and some still available.

So I would think that if the numbers on the coils were the same they would all be the exact same coil with the 3 digit product codes being the same but now I'm not sure what to think when the coils with the same 'coil numbers from TEC' range in price from $40-$80 from HONDA.

I've even been searching to find out who makes the TEC coils to see if they would make replacements that just aren't carried by Honda but no luck. Both my Honda and Kawasaki have TEC coils so I would assume it would have to be a good sized company. I'm pretty sure TECUMSEH makes their own coils for their engines but did a search on them and found nothing that resembled a ATV or bike coil.

Maybe KNOWSALOT can help with this one, I don't ask for much do I?lol

Very interesting Jeff. Maybe you could call one of the places and "decode" the model number to figure out what the difference between and "a" and "b" are.....kinda like decoding a sparkplug number.

If I only knew who makes the TEC coil(I'm not even sure if TEC means anything)that would be a good idea.

I would think they would be interchangable since the atc 185,185s,'plain 200 and 200X and have the same coil resistance values when testing.

Thanks for the idea on the numbers glennj, I never thought of them meaning something like plug numbers do.

No problem Jeff. All these letters and numbers do mean something....it's just a matter of figuring that out.

For all 200X (185,185s and 200 models NOT 200S OR 200M)

Honda part number 30510-167-003 is a direct replacement as an 83-85 200X ignition coil it is from a
1983 Honda NH80MD AERO 80 scooter and is currently still available through Honda for about $40 from Service Honda.

The Hondas
XL500R, ATC 185,185S and 200 and several others also used the (same coil with different part numbers) which doesn't make sense but all have been discontinued by Honda.

I should note that this is for the OEM frame mounted TEC coil with the numbers BS41-CDI or AS41-CDI on them.
