Question for KNOWSALOT
#1
Hey Patrick
Just a quick question on the 185 bike cam that will work on the 200X engine.
I saw a new one cheap on EBAY last week and bought it in case I ever blow the engine I have now and don't wanna spend big money on another web cam.
So I'm measuring it up just to compare it to the specs of my stock cam and the lobe height is actually lower than what the manual has listed for the stock 200X cam.
Is that right?

Hey Jeff.
The measured height of the cam IS lower than the ATC cams. The lift isn't that far off from the ATC version, but if you take a look at the lobe on the XLS cam, you will notice that the ramp is longer......thus more duration.
The same can be said of the Web cams. Not much difference in lift height, but is more than the ATC, but the duration is alot longer, and that is where these engines pick up from a cam in the midrange. Even more so than just a high lift cam.
The engine design on these motors almost have reverse logic when it comes to modifying them. I have found that the lift helps in the upper RPMs on these engines, but at the expense of the low end more than anything I have ever tinkered with. In my opinion,.. the XL185S cam is the best of both worlds. If upper RPMs are what you want, the XR200R cam may be a better choice.....but that cam takes away power from the very bottom in the three wheeler unless it has alot more than the traditional bolt on mods. It's almost like a mild Webcam really and while I don't have specs here handy,...I do remember them being very close.
I don't know what piston you are using, but if it's under a 11:1 CR, you will be OK with any camshaft that I have ever ran across to date.
But when using the larger compression pistons, especially te Wiseco 12:1, be sure to do a valve clearance check if using a Webcam.
I know that the XL185S cam doesn't interfere with the 12:1 piston, but the larger Webcam (not the mild cam) is VERY close and a valve adjustment becomes more critical than ever.
So.....
If it's low to mid you want, go with the XL185S cam.
mid to top, go with an XR200R or the mild Web
mid to better top, go with the bigger Web or even the Powroll
These are just MY recommendations of course based on what I have cam across and what I like when it comes to my riding style...which is all about some mid range.
Have a good weekend.

Thanks again Patrick(I wish I had 1/10th of your knowledge on all this stuff)
I just wanted to make sure I didn't get hosed buy the seller of the cam, it measured only a couple thousands smaller in lobe height than the 200X specs in my honda manual.
When I saw it on EBAY I just had to buy it since it was only $20 and came in Honda packaging with the part # 14101-437-000.
Some day I might need a spare engine

Hey Glennj
Ya wanna know how much I like Patrick's posts and detailed answers?
I have a folder in the MY DOCUMENTS section on my computer with alot of 'KNOWSALOT' information just so I don't have to go searching for the post when I need a reminder about something.
I even did a search for his posts once just to see if he did 'KNOWSALOT' when we were discussing the whole XR intake deal, and all I can say is IMPRESSIVE.
He is an asset to these forums and doesn't get thanked enough for helping us all out.

WOW could you imagine confusion that would be involved with making that! With all the brands, models,
general info, chapters specific, cross referencing etc. etc. etc. and then throw in the wide world of AFTERMARKET! Oh no my heads gonna EXPLODE!!!
I guess that would be why there aren't any books like that already!
There ya go Patrick you could make millions!
