You need to rewind the spring. Prolly need a new spring. $10 on ebay for rebuild kit.

I just replaced a rope in a 1985 Honda 185 that was given to me.
My son removed most of the parts, but I had to help in put it back together.
That spring is a bear to get back in!!!
It works great, but couldnt figure out where the spring for the compression release donut thing goes.
Perhaps if I took it apart, I would remember how it went together, but I was cleaning the carb at the time.
Is there some online place that would show how this part goes together?

I have a few Yamahas, and they have an online parts catalog thing for nearly every motorcycle ever made.
I figure there is, (or should be) something similar to that for the Hondas, but have not found anything after half a day of searching.

Thanks in advance,
RobStupid

The website was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you VERY much.
The Recoil Starter page for that bike shows the parts I am confused about:

Here

Unfortunately it doesnt show how the spring (15) fits into the compression release donut (20), or what else the spring attaches to, if anything. It does show the spring behind the starter pulley (17) mounted to the crank, which I didnt try, but will when I get home.

I forgot to mention that I got the recoil working great, but since I was unsure about the compression release stuff, I left them out. It starts for me just fine, but my son has a really hard time starting it without the compression release working.

Thanks again Thrash and Crash

Thank you, that should help.
My son tried to tell me to stretch the 3 coiled spring around the housing thing like in picture 21, but it didnt seem right. I guess I shouldve believed him, hes the one who took it apart

It confused me at first that they used the same picture for disassembly and reassembly of the compression donut/spring part (picture 9), but I think I see how it goes now.

I will try it when I get home tonight.

PS, the wire is an awesome tip for keeping the recoil spring coiled until you get it into the housing. Mine bit me a couple times and there was lots of swearing until the 4th or 5th time I finally got it.
