have some clutch problems on my 81 atc200
#1
my 81 200 when i bought it the trans shifter shaft was locked up, now after some good help i've got it broke loose and it will shift in to all gears, but it won't move so i don't know much about these but i would guess the clutch is gone, but i was wondering if anyone had any tips for testing it without opening it up, and if my clutch is gone if anyone has some guide lines or specs for changing it. thanks john

Hey John
I found my old manual that covers the 185 and 200 Hondas
You could try adjusting the clutch by loosening the lock nut on the right engine case (it should be somewhere over by the dipstick). After the lock nut is loosened turn the center adjuster screw ]COUNTERCLOCKWISEuntil SLIGHT resistance is felt then stop. At this point back out the adjuster screw CLOCKWISE 1/4 turn.
Then tighten the locknut making sure that the adjuster screw doesn't move while tightening the nut.
Take it for a ride if it works then readjust again the same way.
I would say if it still doesn't move you would need to replace the clutch.

I second that Jeff!!!!!!!! ............ John, have you changed the oil out yet? If so what oil are you trying. My riding budy has the same clutch setup on one of his rides; and he tryed synthetic oil, BAD IDEA! We adjusted that clutch at least 6 times that day, thought it was done for sure! next day we flushed it with the proper wet clutch oil , re-adjusted the clutch and he was good to go, havent adjusted it since! But like jeff said , if adjusting it does make it work a little better, run it for a little bit, and readjust it, it will help seat everything back in.

I knew Mike would find this post...lol
Glad to hear everythings going good with your new baby, went out and worked on my buddies racecar last night and he has the same thing as your did. He's 6 months old though and luckily only had to spend a day in the hospital. (probably should stay longer but our hospital really sucks here)
John always listen to Mike, very good advice. He is one of the members I mentioned in your other post along with KNOWSALOT for being very knowledgable.

thanks jeff, kid is doing great now!...............And the only reason I can give advice on trikes, IS because I am really good at breaking stuff, , then I have to figure a way to fix the darn thing! My wife will back me up on that!!LOL

Heck if all it takes is breaking stuff, I should be upgraded to "Pro mechanic / not rider!" status any day now. LOL
My wifes amazed that I can usually fix what I break, I let her think I'm a MASTER MECHANIC and don't tell her I come to the forum for help.

I personally use Amsoil full synthetic 10-40 for wet clutch 4 stroke. But you can use any oil 'without' the friction reducing additives. Try sticking with something that was MADE for wet clutch motorcycles; this will reduce the headaches later on down the road.
AND yes ......the answer for everything is....Yes Dear,.. Yes Dear,.. Yes Dear..
