hi guys, i love the site. any way, my 1984 250r atc wont shift into 5th gear for some reason, i was wondering if anyone could help. i was told by the previous owner that he tweaked the shift pattern so that 1st is a full click from neutral, and 2nd is a full shift from neutral, thus making me have to double shift to get to 2nd. is there any way to check stuff out without splitting cases? i have a manual but no torque wrench. all help appreciated. btw, i dont think the previous owner split the cases, but he took apart the clutch and fooled around with the shift detent.

does this sound like a shift detent problem? how can i determine whats wrong? im inclinded to do anything besides splitting the cases.

Drain the oil and run a magnet thru it.

 

run a magnet through it? through the oil or through the inside of the tranny? i assume im trying to find shavings in my oil. il go try that later today, but what does the problem point out? what do you think the culprit is?

Could be a clip holding gear in place broke. Maybe the dogs on the gears are worn . If you find pieces of metal than split the cases. Its easy. I've done it.

 

if you find peices of metal in oil that means that 5th gear is broke or missing peices
