1986 200X Help
#1
I just completely rebuilt a 1986 200X from the ground up. I have had this for 13 years and I am pretty familiar but one thing I can't figure out is that it seems to run fine at higher RPM but it will not idle, it will die as soon as you let off the throtle (I did not make any changes to the carb). Also, ocassionally if you give it just enough fuel to run you hear a slight ping towards the front of the motor and it dies instantly. It restarts fine every time. Please let me know if you can help!!

What did it run like before you redone it?
Was there a long time before you rebuilt it?
Is your compression realease cable too tight? That would make a slight ping in the top end if it is too tight?
Did you clean the carb out?
Looks like a pretty sweet ride...

Sounds like maybe some smeg in the idle circuit/jet. You could pull the carb and unscrew the float bowl and use a air compressor to blow it out really good, through the jets. As far as the other problem...What position is the throttle in when it dies? I am wondering if it is right between circuits and it croaks off before/after it kicks over? This machine ran great and never had been touched before. I only did the engine because the head gasket and base gaskets started to leak. Last fall I began do disassemble the three wheeler but I did not do the engine work until a few weeks ago (was assembled until then). I did not initially clean the carb but the float stuck and I started losing fuel so I opened up and did a quick clean up with brake cleaner. Also, this carb is fairly new as I replaced it a few years ago. I can check the decompression cable, how can I tell if it were too tight? Also, I'll probably check the compression of the cylinder which is something I didn't think to do before. Does anyone know what the compression should be? As far as when it dies (to answer Faster250R), it does not do it all the time but often enough, it only happens when you give it just enough throttle to run (as it will not idle) and it is not like when you shut the run switch off when you hear the motor slowly turn off, this cuts out immediately.

I would just loosen it up at the kick starter and then start it and see if you still hear that noise. If you still hear the noise just shut it off and just snug the cable and then tighten the bolts down...
Oh and torch cleaners are good to clean out jets with. just compressed air will not get all the grit off the jets...

If the bike won't idle' its the pilot jet. You must be able to see through it, you need to unscrew it and clean it out. If you are careful you can clean it out with a welders tip cleaner, pick the smallest and reem it out and then blow air through it and some WD 40 or something like that. I have two 86 200xs one for parts and one I built from the ground up. hope this will help.
