Default '83 185 Honda carb question

Trying to find the carb settings for this '83 Honda 185. Looking for, needle clip height, pilot jet number, main jet number. I just ordered a manual but I want to check this thing out to see why it;s crazy rich. I am guessing the previous owner did some tweeking.

Thanks

According to the manual
Carb should be a PD35A
Main Jet 95
Pilot screw (A/F) Out 2 turns Initial
Needle Jet 2nd Groove
Float level .49"
Idle speed 1,400+-100rpm

That said
I have a 82 185S it ran super rich when i got with the stock carb I could not get right

I finaly found a carb from a 200-S
PD35S
I ended up with a 102 main jet
Pilot screw 1.5 turns Needle jet on first groove
Runs great
If I put stock carb back on runs rich even with 95 jet

I have been looking at the carb on dratv for about $45 but have not bought as I only use my 185 as a spare and chase bike when we go out
The only issue I have is
If you start pulling a hill in wrong gear and donot keep revs up engine falls on face you are stuck
I know new carb would fix

But I guess my point is your carb may be the problem
Thanks
Ray

I would say the 8 is a 3
Stock PD35A
I don't think they used a PD85A carb
On the jet make sure your 8 is not a 9
As an 85 jet would extramaly lean not rich

When my 185 was doing the same thing
I first ruled out several possible causes
Spark plug replace
Check valve adjust
Check cam chain adjust
Check ignition timing
Check electrical connections
Especially coil mount and plug wire connections for corrosion and dirt
This could cause weak spark and make engine run rich
If all that checks out
disassemble carb and soak in cleaner overnight put new carb kit try
If still rich
Then new carb time
I did all of this on my 185 before looking for another carb
Good luck

I went and double checked and it is a PD83A carb. I did a quick search on google and I pulled up a post saying they used this carb on the 200 atc, is that possible? Also the main jet is 85. I am going to hunt down a jet kit for the 185 and put it in. we'll see how it runs then.

A carb kit should come with a new jet
But if they go by the number on your carb you would probably end up with an 85 jet again
I would go to the part house and talk to the counter guy see if they have a kit for the carb you have then compair to kit for your 185 if they look the same cool then usually you can read the jet size through the bag hopfully the 185 kit will work in your carb and have the 95 jet

Or
Just get the kit for your carb and ask counter guy if they have a jet assortment
The jets used on that series of carb was very popular and many of the motorcycle shops in the area have quite the assortment
Remember on my 185 I ended up with a 102 main jet

At this point this may be a stupid question but
Is your air filter clean and or is it possible your airbox is restricted?
As we have not covered these stupid but sometimes the obvious we tend to overlook

To check this just give a try running without the air filter connected to carb just open
see what happens if it runs much better
Problem in filter system
If no difference continue with carb
Don't run to long without air filter though as that would be bad on engine

It could be your problem
I do have a 110 that does not like the air box
I have to run an open air filter
Good luck

Most common issue is some one has overtightened the Pilot Screw, ruining the seat in the carb.

The PD83A is off a 200 Standard or 185s its a keihin with a 22mm venturi your going to be wanting the jet needle on the 3rd groove

1 7/8 to 2 1/4 turns out is the happy area for the Pilot closer to the later on the 200s and 185s models. If its falling on its face in the low rpms your pilot screw is turned in to far and creating a lean condition in the lower rpm.

The #85 main sounds right for a 185. The 200 Big red ran a #95 main and the 200s ran a #100.

Google up beatrice cycle (Dr.Atv), they will have a year and model specific rebuild kit for your model. All the 185/200 carbs use the same casting.

Also a thing to consider is dropping from the DR8ES-L plug to a DR7EA. Little hotter plug will help prevent fouling at lower rpm.

If you don't mind can i join in?!! I have an 83 250r atc that I just got running after a total rebuild/restore. I have a big bore 300 kit on it. I mixed the gas about 25:1 maybe almost 30:1 w/ 87 fuel. It seems very very rich!! I have fuel coming out of my muffler!! Do I need to run a 93 octane?? I was reading in a post about this about a month ago but I can't seem to find it to read it again. Also should I be messing around w/ the needle clip setting for mine? Clip is on the second groove. Mine is a 35A carb also if I recall. I am hoping to ride it next weekend. I still need to get the brakes working and a chain. Thanks and hope you don't mind me chiming in??!!!
