ok, I put the pulley in there and everything, and is pulls back when I lay it on it's side, but as soon as I put the thing on the trike, the rope just pulls out and doesn't recoil, is it the spring that is bad? and why does it catch sometimes and not others?

It's really fustrating me,

It is probably either deaging or not enough spring tension
for some times not engaging possibly a little lube

I know what the deal is, I wasn't "pre-loading" the recoil spring and the pulley 2 360 degree turns, before wrapping the excess rope around the pulley and then through the pulley hole in the recoil starter case.

the tension from the pre-loading should fix my problem.
