Hi guys, Been a while since I been on. After recovering from back surgery I`m finally back on my feet.
Anyhow, Those that remember I have been restoring a 83 185s for a while.
So far I`ve rebuilt the rearend with new bearings, brakes and etc. I replaced the chain and sprockets also. The front sprocket I changed to a 11 tooth off a 200X.
The engine I installed a bigger cam, a 200X jug and piston with new rings along with a new timing chain. I added 200X rear hubs and rims and Mud Lite tires.
It has a new carb on it also with a 112 jet.
Here`s my issue. After letting it sit many months since I couldn`t work on it. when I got back to it, the stator had went out. I have a parts bike which is a 200s that I took the stator off of. It fired up on the 1st pull, it runs fairly strong. The only issue is it busts. If you give it half throttle while holding it in one gear it goes to busting real bad. If you change gears it doesn`t bust until the rpm works it`s way up some. It idles nicely with a slight lope due to the cam. If you hold it wide open it busts slightly but the power drops off, but it has explosive midrange power.
After changing jets going up and down, removing the air lid off the breather to make sure it was getting plenty of air, it still busts. I know the issue has to be in the ignition so what do I do next? Is the stator weak? or could it be the coil or pick up coil or even the CDI box going south? Does anyone carry these parts new anymore? Any help is appreciated.

 

Try checking all the grounds in the ignition circuit
Possibly check coil for weakness
If that fails I have a 82 - 185s I think stator is good
I did pull the windings out for the lights as mo 185s needed
I know the coil is bad but the coil and ignition module is the same as a 110 with CDI
Possibly stator is to
I also have a parts 200s but not sure as to condition of any windings I would have to check
But you could look on dratv.com
look in all areas they have a loot of stuff
